Maricopa Jail and Your Thoughts

Maricopa and Humanity Conflict - Your Thoughts?

  1. After reading the article about the women's attempt to sue the Maricopa County Jail, I am somewhat shocked how the corrections officers did not notice her in the cell. The most surprising part is that an employee walked over her while dropping off another inmate. The article does not say whether it was a weekend night, though, where the jail would be more crowded and the officers would be more busy and would not be paying more attention to detail. I believe that the best solution is to not have the plastic bags because someone else will also try to commit suicide as well with the bag. The best option for me is to train the correctional officers more about mental health issues so that may notice more when they go on their regular checkups and also do more regular checkups. ICC123

    1. I agree ICC123, there should be some mental health classes and other tips to look out for in a regular checkup for officers to use. I was also shocked to read about the officers too. I also agree that it would have been more different depending on the day-of-week. CountryGirl123

  2. After reading this article, I have mixed feelings about it. I think it would be okay to have plastic bags in the cans just not in the cell that's holding questionable people. I feel like the officers are in the wrong for just "stepping over" someone in a cell while dropping off another. I think that she does not have a case because she put the bag over herself, not them, and was still intoxicated to begin with. But, the officers should have known better than to ignore a situation like that. CountryGirl123

    1. I think they should not have plastic bag in the cell, because it doesn't matter either way, nobody is happy to be in the cell. I agree with you that officers are wrong for stepping over inmate. she might have a case because the officer clearly ignored her. one of their job is to supervise the inmates not to ignore them.SOCCERBOY123

    2. I agree with you about not having the plastic bag in the cell. Also, I agree with you about how it was wrong how the officers stepped over the inmate and how she may have a case against the jail. It is apart of their jobs to supervise the inmates and their activity....ICC123

  3. As I was reading this article, it also reminded me about the video we were watching in the class about Maricopa jail. I'm glad nothing serous happen to the lady but I think whether the inmates are mental stable or not they should be supervise all the times. Sometimes the correction officers mistreat these inmates because they are "criminals" or bad people. the officers should pay close attention to the inmates if they decided to take them to the jail. they should also remove any materials from the cells that would be consider danger to the inmate. Most of the inmate are not happy to be in the jail, so the they will do anything to hurt themselves or others. soccerboy123

    1. I agree with you soccerboy123, they should have made sure all dangerous items were out of the cell, even knowing that she was intoxicated with a pill. There were no indications on what she was going to do to herself. I think after awhile, officers do develop a vision about "bad people" and "criminals" almost like a stereotype, I agree. 2. I understand why they put trash bags in the cells. Any object in the wrong hands can become dangerous. But there is a difference between an unhappy inmate and a sucidal inmate. When a person wants to kill themselves most will find a way. I dont think this woman wanted to kill herself because it does not take 45minutes to suffocate with a trash bag.

  4. I think that if the woman really wanted to commit suicide she would have found a way. I also think that this incident shows grouse neglect on the jails part. The guards should have been fired and would have been fired if the woman had died. i do not think that counseling for the guards will prevent this from happening again. I do think that the guards are to blame but the woman is also responsible for her actions . She could have asked for help many times before she was put in that cell. They should not take trash bags out of all the cells. Everyone shouldn't have to pay for the woman's mistakes.

    1. I do agree that it would be unnecessary to remove the bags from the cell as someone committed to injuring themselves would do so, regardless of whether or not they have access to a garbage bag. But I disagree that the guards should have been fired. They most likely have other things to attend to and simply didn't feel like dealing with the strange woman lying on the ground, and may have written it off as harmless. They should be told their actions were not acceptable, and disciplinary action should be taken; but firing them would be a bit harsh.- Anonemoose123

  5. In the situation described in the article the officer should have been more attentive to the woman. They clearly saw her lying on the floor, yet neglected to remove the bag from her head or see if she needed some assistance. The officers are most likely busy and do not want to have to deal with a situation like this. You can't have a straw or a lid for your drink in zoos since an animal may injure itself with them or choke on them. Its silly that humans should have to be treated in the same way with plastic bags. However it is the job of the officer to take care of the offender, even if the event is pointless. I like what the sheriff is doing with the rest of the jail, with implementing areas such practices such as the tent city. This shows the offenders that they wont get off easily just because of lack of space, and they will be stopped from committing further violations. But overall it would be best if the Jail instructed its officers on what to do in situations such as what is described in the article and ensure the proper course of action is taken.

    1. Good point anonemoose. Poor attention to detail or just straight up negligence on the officer's part. And as simple as the zoo quote is, it has a lot of meaning and significance to this particular situation. Therefore, it is only fair for the officers to reflect on their actions through disciplinary actions, additional training and counseling. ChiefO'Keefe123

  6. (My comment is strictly based off the video) Just from my own knowledge and from watching the video I think the incorporation of a "military style" correctional facility is great due to it's unorthodox nature. It was a thought that was formulated and has become successful throughout the county for 20 years strong. Is it right for every county? Well that once again can only be determined by the people residing within that county. However, is it any more dangerous having inmates housed in open-walled tents being monitored 24 hours a day than in an indoor correctional facility where violent criminals can plot and premeditate behind closed cell doors? On top of that there are programs that help offenders get out of jail quickly and back into their homes. One example was the chain gang as seen in the video. Another (not mentioned in either article or video) one that was recently incorporated (within this year) was the control of one of the local animal shelters. The jobs are given to chosen inmates which consist of feeding, cleaning and tending to the animals. This helps teach inmates work ethic and working skills to help them earn a job when they leave jail. With all this being said, what's wrong with something a little out of the norm? ChiefO'Keefe123
