Hot Spots/Mapping and Social Media and Chicago Police Department - Your Thoughts?

Hot Spots, Crime Mapping, and Social Media - Chicago P.D. Response to Violence

  1. This article hits all of the topics that we have discussed so far in class. It backs up the idea that those who are facing severe poverty feel the need to do anything to support themselves and their family, even if it is criminal. In the video we watched about gangs in Chicago, we saw the same thing. The things these people do are undoubtedly wrong. There is something they believe that I agree with, the system is broken. That refers to government and the policing system, I think. We've talked about brutality and stop and frisk being unconstitutional. A majority of gang members are from a minority; these people are the ones who seem to be most affected by the brokenness of the system. Racism within police departments makes thing like stop and frisk corrupt. Chicago police and other departments across the US are trying out new ways to try to predict crime. I thought the idea of using social networking to their advantage was an interesting idea. It is a lot like the way the government gains access to phone records and other things; instead officers would be looking at social networks, which are public, like Facebook. I’m sure it gets more complicated after that step, but the idea is a good one. Besides, businesses do the same exact thing when looking to hire applicants. Plus, we already know that association with an offender can make someone suspect. By tracking the relationships between offenders, could possibly help officers fight gang violence, and even reduce gang activity. This would have to be done without infringing the fourth amendment; otherwise it would put you back to square one. We are humans there will always be some sort of crime, it’s our nature. Methods brought up in this article are definitely ways that will benefit police departments, and keep America safe. RMG789

    1. I agree that they are choose to do things that are wrong, but not all gang members are facing severe poverty. Some do, but as the video discussed that many members of the Satan Disciples had legitimate jobs on where they made money. Others resorted that to selling drugs and illegal means of making money but not all of the gang members were in poverty.

    2. I would agree that when you are associated with an offender it makes others think that you are also and offender. Using social media to figure out more people that are taking part in gangs is a good idea because the more people they find, the less people in gangs committing crimes. There will deinitely always be crime but hopefully these methods that the officers are using will help with declining the selling of drugs and murder rates. -MH789

  2. The article that I read really talked about all the things we have read in class and the movie. People that live in poverty are the ones that are most likely to do all of things they need to do to support their family and themselves. To people that live in poor neighborhoods life is a struggle and a cold world for them and they go out here in these streets to get want they need by any means. That’s why the gang, killing and other rates are up in cities like have people that live in poverty. For some people turning to gangs for help is better than being alone and poverty, and some people do it for protection, and others do it for the money. Jimoh789

    1. Definitely agreed, being know for a lower class, or as a different minority race can lead to killing. The citizens now become numb to morals and pride for your country. Now the pride turns direction into the gang life supporting each other to death. The morals are lost and killing becomes a gift or some sort of a "have to do". And yes they turn to the easy way out. 2. I agree with your points. The less fortunate people in this world need to do more to try to stay ahead in life. Most people these days take stuff for granted and the less fortunate people and people in high poverty neighborhoods are more likely to commit a crime to survive in life. The gangs and death rates are up but the usage of social medias to catch a few of the gang members is a good idea. Cities with severe gang violence would take as many gang members as possible off the street to keep that local area as safe as possible. LF789

  3. This article is somewhat a summary of policing methods and strategies. Proactive and smart policing is the key that they want to find to end the crime rate. Recording and being strict with searches are the top methods. And these methods might seem to be discriminating and abusive. A perfect example is the Stop and Frisk, it is discriminative to the groups that are being searched for no probable reason. The thing is that results are coming through crime rate has been dropping when these methods have been put into place. I liked that this article was honest in bringing up the point that poverty and race can lead to criminal activity. A poor man would do whatever it takes to eat, thus leading to steeling. If you mistreat minority races the will gang up on you. If somebody is destroyed mentally the will take the easy way out which are becoming a gang member. NR789

    1. I agree that this is like a summary of what we have done in class. This was a very good of stop and frisk. I would have to agree that this has helped to decrease the number of crimes, which are oddly connected with poverty. I would have to agree on how you feel about gang members, and one becoming a gang member. DO789

    2. I agree with DO789 that the article is a summary of what we have done in class thus far. This was a good example of stop and frisk. I agree that this has helped to decrease the number of crimes, which for some strange reason are connected with poverty. I would have to agree about the feelings regarding gang members and becoming a gang member.

    3. I agree proactive intelligence lead policing is an effective way to prevent violent crimes. I don’t think stop and frisk is very effective though considering the statistics are minorities get stopped more but carry weapons less so although the crime rate is dropping I don’t think stop and frisk is effectively the cause.KAM789

  4. This is a great article because not only are we all some what familiar with Chicago its only about 3 hours away depending on what part you go to. I have an older sister who chose to live out in Chicago because she loves the area but like any city there are good and bad neighborhoods. I thought it was interesting how they are able to link together gang members by using this network analysis and its beneficial to them because using these social networks the members will post what they are doing and maybe get a hit. I think it is a great new development but i do not know how well using these resources would hold up in court. I also think that it is interesting how they are able to discover who is likely to kill or be killed in areas.

My family members that kive in the kind of poor part of chicago ay its just bad down there because of all the killings and how heavy the gang violence is. Jimoh789

  5. I found that the information they gathered was interesting such as how people who have been arrested within the last five years have a higher risk of being killed in the near future. There was a lot about gangs that I was unaware of, I know there are gangs everywhere but from what the article said majority seem to be in Chicago which is kind of scary since Peoria isn't too far from there. I also thought it was a good idea of them to create hot spots in the popular areas for gang activity to try and help decrease the amount of crime happening. I definitely am against the gangs being formed and hopefully what the officers are doing can help stop them from growing and decrease the amount of drugs being sold and murders being done. -MH789

  6. I would have to say that this article is a great example of what we have learned in class. It seems that it puts all of the components from class together, and proves how well they can work. Chicago is an extremely high violence area., and by him going in and taking action proved this can be fixed. Stop and frisk was something that we learned in class. It was proven in this article although, some people were very unhappy with the outcome of it. The trend of gang members seems to be based on their home life. Poverty is a huge contributor to the number of crimes and gangs in the area. Police officers are taking their part to do whatever they need to do to decrease this crime. DO789

    1. I agree, it seems like this lesson was planned out perfectly in time for the midterm because the essay itself covers everything we've learned so far in addition to having the questions about the chapters we have covered. Hotspots, poverty, race, big cities, drugs, gangs, Chicago has it all and is a perfect case to study for a more in depth look at how all of these pertain to the situation Chicago is in now.

  8. This article does a good job of applying everything talked about in class in the book. The way the police in Chicago are using intelligence based policing I think I a very useful way to take advantaged of the arrests they make. I like the way the police are looking at Chicago as not having “hot spots” and having bad networks of people instead. I also think alerting at risk people too the fact that they are at risk is the right thing to do. Ultimately I think that by continuing to do this I would nit be surprised if the violent crime rate drops over the years.KAM789

  9. There are definitely a vast array of subjects that we have learned about that tie into this specific example. We have the discrimination of minority groups along with poverty leading to the creation of organized crime and drug trade originating out of Pilsen which is located in a large metropolitan area. All of these circumstances create a perfect storm for gang activity and violent crimes. One of the ways I believe this can be changed by the police is to heavily enforce the public order crimes that reinforce the broken window theory. If they can get the streets cleaned up or at least move the crime indoors then the neighborhood might see a drop in other crimes as well, mainly due to the fact that most gangs are financed through prostitution and drug sales. Pilsen is definitely a hotspot that needs monitoring, but the rare breed of nearly legitimate gang members known as the SDs managed to bring themselves down because of a power struggle within the gang. Undercover agents may also be able to destabilize gangs by busting high ranking members which might cause these power struggles. I'm sure if the Chicago police had resources they might be able to wrangle the serious crime issue they have.

  10. I agree with jimoh789 everything that was in the article was everything that we have talked about as a class and also read. Poverty People Can do it all get whatever they want take care of there families and loved ones make sure they eat and have clothes on there back. Such as poor people who are out here walking the streets putting up signs starving with nothing to eat no shelter at all isn't right. gabe789

  11. What I got out of the article was that Chicago's gang violence is a lot worse than I thought it was. I knew it was horrible but it said it had more gangs and gang members than anywhere else with the exception of Los Angeles, which is crazy to think about. The usage of social medias to try to catch a couple more potential gang members is a good idea and should be implemented anywhere and everywhere possible. I think it was all very relatable to the text and what we discussed over the course of the class lectures. The gang violence is a major issue today and it proceeds to increase and worsen unless we step up and use several methods to clear this problem up. I think implementing more wire taps to the gang cell lines or sending up confidential informants that can help deal and decrease the gang motive and affiliation. Yeah this would violate their rights as citizens a little bit but gang association should be an exception because it's not for a good cause, the Satan Disciples made it very clear they will do whatever possible to get money and that means violence is going to keep happening. 12. The article shed light onto an interesting subject that has recently hit the law enforcement field. I personally really do enjoy the idea of using social media to gain leads and information on current or even future crimes. It runs parallel with exactly what we have talked about in class as well as what the book states. The stop and frisk policy is still treading in dangerous waters due to the fact that racial profiling seems to be the problem the majority of the time. It is unfortunate that people of the city of Chicago and in other cities turn to crime and gang activities when facing problems with poverty. I have to somewhat agree that the system is broken and leaves many people with virtually no other choice.
