3 Theoretical Perspectives in Sociology

  1. I think this article makes alot of food points and covers the three different types well, however he seems to bounce around quite a bit from one to another and puts much more time into the structural-functionalism approach. I wonder what Talcott Parson would say about American society today in which women and men are becoming more and more equal. I remember when my mom and many other women entered the workforce, it was a new idea of bringing extra income to the family. Now I think it has changed into a situation where both parents must work to support the family. Answering the speakers question at the end of this article, I would probally find myself to be more of a symbolic interationalism type of sociologists. I like the thought of the microsocial point of few. In a sense guided by obsevations and not getting so involved. I like looking at things from a day to day point of view. To me it just seems like a more peaceful way to view life and a more approriate way to study sociology.Camp012

    1. I also wonder what Talcott Parson would say about today's society. So many things have changed. Women are becoming just as independent as men and have the same rights. Though pay still differs and respect in workplaces still vary I believe things have changed for women for the better. Maybe one day there will be a women president. I wish that the men being the bread winner and the mom the homemaker is something that could be a reality now and days but with a terrible economy and the cost of living continuing to rise I don't know if that'll ever be a reality again. Not saying I want the easy way out and stay at home with the kids, because we all know that is a full time job on its own. It would jus be nice to have that option. newmommy2be012

  2. I think that this is a very informational article to read with a lot of solid points, I like the examples he uses to get the point across. One example that really stuck out to me was the rug and the lady with the children, it really shows that depending upon your perspective will determine how you see that rug. Is it a piece of décor, is it a souvenir or is it a place for prayers. Depending on who you are, your background and your beliefs the way you see that item could vary. Just as well the picture of the lady with the children. Is that a privilege to be at home with the children, cooking, cleaning, and tending to children all day. Or is that a sacrifice, could the women be out earning money for the family just the same as the bread winning father? Should she be considered a role model to the children, and be looked up to? The conflict theory suggests that it is unfair to deem the women to stay at home and be responsible for all of the house duties, cooking, and tending to children. It gives the man the upper hand. I can honestly say as a wife and a mother to be, though I am in school to further my education, have a real career and make my son on the way proud, it has also crossed my mind that yes I would love to be a stay at home mom. I wish this world wasn't so expensive, I wish that there could be one bread winner of the house hold and ill stay at home and be the home maker. But, when reality sets in I'm not so sure that's a realistic option. Though I find the conflict perspective most dominant in this world now and days I do not believe it is the right one. But it is the reality. newmommy2be012

    1. I understand totally where you are coming from. I think that although it should not always be the mother that stays at home, there are plenty of fathers out there that would like the opportunity to bond with their children like that. I believe as a father who raised 2 boys from 4 and 2 years old by myself and had to work that there are many men out there that would love to have the opportunity to stay at home with the kids while there wife worked. At least when they are babies. But now both parents have to work in most households to survive.Camp012

    2. As a husband and father, I understand the desire of the mother to stay at home with their children. My wife and I went through the same situation. She really wanted to be there as the kids were growing up, but reality is reality. I have a friend that is a stay at home dad because his wife is a great provider. He loves it. It's all about perspective. I respect that women want to contribute to the workplace. My daughter is at an age that she is talking about wanting to be a stay at home mom, but I keep telling her that she is robbing society of what she can bring to the workplace. The world needs this kind of diversity. That is the only way we can make the world a better place. Kane012

  3. The structural functionalists' point of view is a view that is somewhat still in place today. There is still the need for the structure, but a modified version of it, for sure. The time frame that this view "went dormant"(the 1950's) was after the end of World War II and the men had come back to the United States to find that women "had to do what they had to do" while their husbands were gone to war. They had entered the workplace and were able to do the work that was normally specified only for men. This paved the way for women in society. Granted, it is still not "equal playing ground", but women have proven to be strong performers in all kinds of industry. The social conflict view will be in place from now on. Society has changed in the fact that different "groups" (i.e. blacks, whites, gays, men and women, etc.) can now voice their opinions and beliefs. The other "groups" in society may see things different, but that can be good. Members of these groups can possibly start to see the views of the other groups and maybe start to accept those views, thereby changing their own perspective. The symbolic interactionism view has been tough for me to grasp, but this actually put it into a little better perspective for me. The examples of the rug and the mother helped. Where I work has multiple locations that are specified as prayer rooms(and this type of prayer involves the use of a specific rug). This is hard for some people to understand, but once it is placed in front of you, it really becomes second nature. It has opened my eyes to see things altogether different. Kane012

  4. The three theoretical perspective in sociology very different point, functionalism, conflict, and symbolic view and how man and women play different role in society. Functionalism tent to be more conservative and preserve the traditional role in society for example female should do work at home take care the kids, and man should provide the income for the family, and also believe that sociology should enact social change. The conflict theory is complete different from functionalism more social change more equality between women and man. Symbolic is more focus study society relationship in a small group to get some idea of society as a whole. Our society today it is more conflict change for example marijuana have been become legal in some state, Gay married equality some of major change recently in America creating controversy among the population. futbol012

  5. If I did not understand the major theoretical perspectives of sociology before, I do now. In reflecting over the video as a whole, I realized the numerous amounts of connects and correlations that occur within our society. What may seem like the most obscure detail in relevance to a major sociological fact, turns out to be the root cause of the societal event occurring. Then once culture, religion, gender, and values are brought in, it is quite evident how complex society really is. Sociology is a discipline that needs to be studied in my opinion or how else can we hope to comprehend the world around us. Society appears to be at the height on conflict today! There are so many disputes amongst the public on topics like gender, sexuality, and race. Sociological study is needed now more than ever. farmgirl012

    1. I agree, until I stared to look a society from a sociologists perspective, I never really noticed how many different connections there are. I find it fascinating how you can trace many of the disputes we have as a society have today back to sociology. Firedancer012

  6. I thought the professor explained the perspectives very well. I Like how he explained the structural functionalists theory, by tying in how religion, government, and the education system are all very structured institutions. It shows how sociologists who follow this theory view the world. The conflict theory is the one that I feel people understand the most, because it's easy to see how much conflict their is in the world on a daily basis. The symbolic internationalism theory interested me the most, because from observations I've made, it seems like the one that most people overlook when studying a given situation. It's easy to study how education, government , and religion effect an individual. But do we ever stop too look at how outside factors influence a person? Internet, counter cultures, trends, and hundreds of other factors play into who we are as individuals. Firedancer012

  7. This man made the material make sense. I appreciated how easy he was to follow and the comparisons he made helped everything become clear for me. In my opinion, the structural functionalist theory is so far out dated and full of crap. There are people who still hold that mentality....in today's world they are called sexists. I can see, however, how it would have worked and been the norm back in the 1950's. The conflict theory is far more practical for today's society. There always seems to be a constant struggle between two different types of groups, ie: men/women, workers/management, straight/gay, racial clashes, and religions. Take a look at the recent headlines. Furgeson, gay marriage, Kim Davis, police shooting, and the list could go on. They all fall into Karl Marx approach on conflict theory. The third, symbolic interactionism is not quite as easy to define for me. In this video, his references to the rug and the mother helped to understand it some. If I am understanding this right, this could be something that is fitting for our everyday lives. Basically, things are how you perceive them. And your view will not be the next person's and so on. 8. The way the professor gave different meanings of theoretical perspectives was very explainable. I liked how he broke down the combination on how society functions, how we live our lives and how we function in relationships. I also like how the professor gave an example on how men had more earning potential than women. Women were more homemakers. In my opinion , women yes has more stability to stay at home cook, clean , look after there children (homemakers) , but what makes society thinks that women did not have any earning potential, or didn't have the potential to do what men were doing , or wanted to get up and work. I think work related affairs should be split 50/50 between men and both women. The way the professor gave an example on how we all have rolls and expectation , I agree 100%, we are judge on how well we play our roles. I also liked how the professor broke down the three perspectives, visualized on structural functionalism, conflict, and on symbolic interactionism. The topic I found most interesting was interactionism and marriage. I like how he explained how marriages should negotiate things. In my opinion, the way the professor broke down the different aspects on how marriages should be is very self-explanatory. Marries today, should follow these examples, with these examples marries would will get along with no problem. Socialbutterfly

  9. This video explained the Social theories better than the others I have viewed so far. The example of Structural Functionalism as a car or the human body was perfect. All parts of the society working together for one function. Of course most will not agree with the traditional family structure anymore. In this day and age it takes both adults in a traditional family working and taking care of the children. There are also situations where women are the breadwinners today. It's a different society than in the 1960's. The conflict theory is most dominant today. This theory puts the most emphasis on social change. People will always be in competition for more power and resources. There will always be tensions in the roles of people in society. The theory psychologist use most is the symbolic theory. We communicate through interaction with people and things. There are many meanings to may different things, symbols, to different types of people. The one that appeals most to me is the Symbolic Theory. nana012
