Shackled Birth.....

Shackled Birth.....

  1. I do not agree with this article at all. I think that it is completely wrong for females to be shackled while they are giving birth. There are not going to be trying to harm themselves or trying to escape, they are trying to give birth to their child as comfortable as they can. With them being shackled this is almost impossible for them to do this and as the article stated this is cruel and unusual punishment. Yes they have done things wrong to put themselves in prison but the child they are trying to give life to has done nothing wrong. Sometimes when women are in a certain position this could put strain on the baby. So having them shackled to where they can not move is wrong and I do not agree and I hope that we can see how this is harming them more than helping them. They have a guard in the room with them in case something goes wrong that should be enough. Green789

    1. I agree that it is wrong to have the women shackled up while giving birth. It does in a way violate the constitution because it is cruel and unusual punishment. I think that just having a guard in the room is good enough to keep the doctors and everyone else safe. Every state should have the law that women shouldn't be shackled up while giving birth. -Barcelona789

  2. After reading the title of the article you can immediately tell what the article is going to be about. I don’t think it is right for any woman to be shackled while giving birth. While the woman is giving birth I think the last thing on her mind is to cause a scene when she is already in so much pain. In the video we watch in class about pregnant inmates the women giving birth feet were shackled until a little bit after they gave birth. Even though the lady convicted a crime the child never asked to be treated like a prisoner just because of their mothers previous actions. Imagine if some complications happened during the birth and the lady had to move her legs but couldn't because her legs were shackled together. Those few seconds that it takes for the guard to take off the handcuffs could change the lady and babies life. -Barcelona789

  3. I find that shackling a woman while giving birth should not be something that is done. In the article, the lady remembers being shackled to the bed, but the Director of Administration says that it couldn’t have happened. It says that four other women in the program reported they were shackled during labor. I don’t think that is something that you just forget. Yes, the females have committed crimes and were taken in while they were pregnant, but I’m pretty sure the women are not going anywhere fast once you are in the hospital delivering a baby. Things like shackling a mother to the bed I feel would be a hazard. What if there were complications and it was an emergency? About 10 years ago, there were four percent of women in state prisons and three percent of women in federal prisons who were pregnant at the time of admittance. With how many females there are pregnant in the system, there should be other ways to handle the security then being shackled. CSI 789

    1. One thing that had come into my head after reading the part about denying the shackling was why do they deny it if it is not prohibited in the state? The only reason they would do this is because they know themselves that it is wrong and that the majority of the public would be against it so they instead of owning up and try to give a reasoning for doing such a cruel thing they decide to lie and try to save themselves from embarrassment. -Acerunner789

  4. I can see nothing wrong with shackling the pregnant inmates before and after but not during birth. Since these inmates are pregnant some people may think that they should be seen as harmless but you can never be too sure. With the legs being free you never know if one will try to kick somebody or something, then of course for their hands they would be able to grab things or throw them. If anything they should let only non-violent criminals be unshackled but never violent offenders. During the birth inmates should never be shackled it just doesn’t make sense or seem like a healthy way of giving birth and while a baby is coming out of them I couldn’t see anyone willing to do much while that is going on. Also if I do recall the video from class one women had said something about a certain drug given to her that had caused her lower half to be numb and she couldn’t feel anything on her lower half so if that is true why couldn’t the inmates be given this drug unless they are allergic or cause birthing issues. -Acerunner789

    1. I do recall that video where the woman talks about he lower part of her body is numb. It is just stupid on the police officers part and they are to afraid to admit it. That poor excuse about, "We only handcuff the hands during transportation....." means she is just lying to cover her tracks. Then later on in the article to find out that a women in labor shouldn't be shackled at all really made me mad at this officer. She should be up holding the rules herself not violating it. Phenom789

  5. I was reading this article and I had my reasons for the woman to be hand cuff to the bed or cuff her hands together, but I don't think it is necessary to hand cuff her during birth. I'm pretty sure that when a woman is in labor they don't want to do anything except get the baby out of them. I would think that the doctors would give the woman drugs so she can't feel pain while birth. Where the drugs won't make her functional to move that much. I don't mean to say not to hand cuff her the whole time, but before and after the labor not have her in chains during birth. Come on it seems like common sense but the officers aren't thinking about the inmate but by the book, and it turns out the book even says to not have her chained during birth. I mean what if something goes wrong during birth where the mother is going to die and you have this stupid chain in the way. Where doctors could be tripping and falling of this chain or have to move it out of the way for CPR. All I have to say it was poor judgment on the officers part. Phenom789

    1. I like how you wrote about safety issues with the chains. They really could get in the way during critical moments during the process. I ultimately feel that shackling mothers during childbirth is unnecessary. -Pack789

  6. I had some idea that pregnant women were at least handcuffed during labor, but I had no idea many have been shackled at their ankles. I can understand why law enforcement officials would want to do this, but I don't think a woman in labor would want to escape. I would recommend shackling her immediately after birth just to be safe. In Virginia though the fact that so many ex women prisoners have come forward with their stories and in turn being supported by NGO's in the state yet the prisons are still denying the accusations probably shows just proves that the women are right. I'm also shocked that Illinois was the first state to ban shackling during labor, and even more shocked that only 12 states have followed suit since 2000. That is ridiculous, these women be prisoners, but most these women aren't violent just victims of harsh mandatory sentences for drug charges and actually want to be good mothers to their newborns, but aren't even allowed the freedom of giving birth. 7. I think that cuffing a woman while in the process of giving birth is complete nonsense. I feel as if a woman wouldn't want to do anything rather than focus on giving birth. I don't think a pregnant woman, who is potentially under the influence of hospital drugs, getting very far if they tried to escape. As long as there is a guard present, women should be uncuffed. I just feel that it a very unnecessary for a woman to be shackled while giving birth. This also poses a safety issue to the inmate, doctors, and baby. Chains could get in the way of doctors and can create a hazard for the baby as well. Hopefully this is something that will change in the future. Although they are criminals, there is another life being born that isn't. -Pack789
