Diversion Programs......

  1. I liked this video because it was short and to the point yet still informative. I think videos like these should be made more often, because, I can see something like this being very useful to the first time offenders Attorney Kevin Hayslett is referring too. I also thing diversion programs should be more publicized. This program is a way to keep first time offenders out of the system, and studies have shown that once someone has gone to prison they are more likely to go back. A program like this prevents offenders from going there for their first crime and could be the deciding factor on whether or not they go back. In addition to keeping first time offenders and those with little or no criminal record, out of jail, this program also gives people the opportunity to get that offense completely off their criminal record which in anyone's case would be a good thing. 2. This was precise and to the point. I like how he was wording the process and what exactly the program is. He made it very understandable and easy to follow how the process goes. I liked this video a lot. Attorney Kevin Hayslett did a great job explaining what a diversion program is. Someone who commits a crime for the first time like a misdemeanor and such can get their case completely off their criminal record. I think this is a great idea because in this program you can do community service and other helpful activities. It teaches them a lesson in life as well as earn their way out for a stupid decision they made. This program should be more known to the public and first offenders. This program also makes it to where there is not wasted space in the jails taken up. Many people tend to make mistakes why punish them in jail when they can work it off?

    1. I agree with what you have said, people do things all the time without thinking and it get them into trouble. Having this program available to them will be able for them to make up for their mistake. Overall, I thought the video was straight to the point and was informative.

    2. I agree with you. It shouldn't be about what they did. It is about how they can learn from that mistake and how the program can give them a turning point in their situation. DaBulls456

  3. This is a very informative video and I think it could really be useful for anyone. A lot of people feel like they’re getting off easy being on parole, but in actuality they could have managed not to have a record by knowing about these programs. I think these programs do a lot of good for people who commit low level offenses and really don’t need to be in jail. It won’t cost the offender anything to go to prison, but it will cost them to enter these programs. On the other hand, a lot of tax dollars are spend keeping these low level offenders in prison, when it could be going towards other things. I strongly agree with these programs and I believe that this was a very good video that should be spread around to educate people, instead of showing police officers in a negative light all the time.

  4. I like how he was clear and straight to the point in this video. In a short amount of time, he explained what a diversion program is. People that commit low offense crimes should be able to get this opportunity instead of being on probation. Keeping these people out of the jails will not only benefit them, but also the people of the community because they will not have to spend tax dollars for them being in jail. I also believe people should be given a second chance and by that for their first offense not being charged, but doing community service to keep it off their record is a no brainer. People should be aware that there is this program available to them, so they do not have to have a crime on their record. People do stupid things and for the first time, they do them they should not be punished for them.

    1. I think you're absolutely right when you say that doing community service to keep criminal charges off a person record is a no brainier. That is why I think that everyone, even those who don’t intend on committing any crimes should know about this program. It serves more than just one purpose and I think it has the ability to benefit America greatly if more people are educated about. Piglet456

  5. This video was pretty self explanatory because it is something that any criminal can try to do when going to court. I never really knew what this meant until I learned in class and saw this video. I mentioned in the video that it is mostly to get into a program without getting the criminal charge. I think that it should be for people who are getting like a little petty charge because if someone where to commit a bigger crime that it shouldn't be there opinion period. It also mentions that if you have no record at all and you commit a crime for something small it shouldn't be just you might be eligible it should say that they need to complete a program to have their record stay clean. Trying to get diversion alone will be hard enough because there are some lawyers out there that won't probably even try to get diversion and will want you to just serve the time in jail or prison. Over all I thought this video was excellent. DaBulls456

    1. I agree with you, however in the video he did state that it was for small, misdemeanor charges. Someone up for assault most likely wouldn't have this option. But I do agree that they should be required to take the program and complete it to keep the record clean. This would mean that they would be required to return to court with a paper saying they completed the program. Also, many lawyers would not go straight for diversion unless their client were directly asking for it. DeadMan456

  6. This video was nice and to the point. It gave me a clear understanding of what a diversion program is and who its for. This is a great way for misdemeanor offences to be dropped, if you have no prior record. I do believe this could also help chronic offenders such as alcoholics and drug abusers. This could get them into a treatment program and afterwards, give them the opportunity to join in community service projects to take them away from their habit. DeadMan456

    1. I agree. There is too many petty offenses getting locked up and peoples lives becoming ruined. Diversion programs are cheaper and more effective. Its a shame that more prisons and jails dont have these programs. It gives petty offenses like trying pot with your friends, a second chance to realize whats right.

  7. I think diversion programs are the way to go. People may mess up sometimes in life. Lets take something like drug problems. There are a lot of kids out there, that at some point try drugs, especially pot. It is easy for them to get caught and arrested and their life be over. The will have a conviction of possession of drugs. They may get probation, or even jail time. The chances of them getting a good job are very low. Because of that one moment with their friends, there lives are ruined. Discretion programs are the way to go for these first time offenders, in these minor violations. Going and putting out community work, and attending classes is a good thing. It will be much more effective than just throwing them in jail. It is also a lot cheaper for the states to do so. If gives these minor offenders a wake up call to the real horrors of prison and jail, and gives them a chance to fix their values.

    1. I like what you had to say about an initial mistake someone can make "with they’re friends." We have all heard stories. Some of them we call our own! Everyone is young and stupid at some point in life, but only a select few are prosecuted for whatever they did. Most of these one-time offenders, especially with drug charges, did not weigh out the consequences of they’re actions. They are still young and trying to impress. They aren’t thinking about future careers and a family one day! The diversion program is a perfect way to get they’re mind set for a new start in life. I believe it shows the offender, the crimes not worth it. If the offender possibly has a drug problem, he/she may receive help. Twal456

  8. In my opinion, diversion programs are the way to go. Sadly, they are not promoted at the level they should be. People who would not be able to afford a lawyer would most likely not hear of this alternative and take the sweetened sentencing from the judge because he/she was ill informed about the possibilities. If I was looking at jail time and offered probation, you can believe I'm going to try and get probation! With all this being said, a conviction on one’s record can cause major problems in the real world. Job opportunity lost, trust issues with public organizations, and very stern punishment if another offense is committed. I would rather go to jail for a specific amount of time and not have a conviction on my record, than get on probation with a conviction. A clean slate is always better to have! I think the majority of people who would use diversion are first time offenders for smaller crimes. They need to be aware of this option upfront. It invokes positive change on their life by means of rehabilitation and motivation to not go to jail. There are many positive outcomes provided with the option of diversion. It should be used whenever possible! Twal456
