Sexual Assault Victims and Holisitc Care in the Medical and CRJ Systems

Sexual Assault Victims and Holisitc Care in Criminal Justice

  1. This was a timely article written from a health care prospective rather than a criminal justice point of view. It reinforced the idea that this is a specialized segment of health care that requires specific training to be successful. The success rate of 68% convictions for those arrested speaks for the success of the SANE training program and dedication of those who complete the training. The article talked about sexual assault response teams, which implies an integrated approach between health care, law enforcement and local prosecutors. Each element must work together as all are dependent on each other for a successful outcome. She talks about training prosecutors, but I believe there would also be cross training among the various groups. She made an interesting comment about the mental health component for both the victims and trained nurses. The trauma involved must be intense and having mental health care professionals available must be included in follow up treatment. Humvee123

    1. I think that training of the various groups will definitely help them work in tandem with each other so they could work more efficiently and effectively. If all the groups in dealing with the crime work at the same level then it can raise that 68% conviction rate higher so there are not all these unsolved sexual assaults and the victim could get closure knowing their attacker isn’t still out there. 2. This was an informative look into the medical side of sexual assault cases that are not as well-known as what happens in the law enforcement side. It was good to see that a large majority of hospitals had at least one specially trained nurse but of course it would be better if they shrunk down the 700 hospitals that do not have a nurse that is specifically trained to get at least one in their hospitals, with the stress of the job and the patients they have to help it can take a toll on the body and the mind so I can see why there are not a lot of nurses scrambling to get the job. Sexual assault response teams were also mentioned in the article, which is the healthcare, prosecution, and law enforcement components working together to help solve the crime. The 68 percent conviction rate is pretty good; if there are more trained nurses and increased communication between law enforcement and the medical personnel then the percentage of the crime being solved will go up. 1. I agree, it is very important that all hospitals have at least one individual who deals with things of this nature. I also can see why nurses dont volunteer very often to take this job. I personally think that dealing with things like this everyday could really wear on a individual. It takes a certain person to be able to do this work, so I can see why there is such a lack of these nurses. gabegun123

    2. I agree, I never hear about the medical side of what happens to rape victims, and how difficult that job is to do as well. Nurses in every hospital should be trained in rape victims.

  3. This was a great article that really helped me to understand how the lack sexual assault nurses has had an impact in the victims of these crimes. It was shocking to hear how many hospitals around the country do not a SANE nurse at their facility. With sexual assault crimes happening by the hundreds every day, it seems bizarre that so many hospitals still do not address this reoccurring problem as strongly as they should. I think it would be a very beneficial thing on both the hospital and the victims end. It would create more jobs for the community along with help these victims find closure with themselves. The article stated that many sexual assault victims do not even report the incident because they feel that they will not be taken seriously. This is a sad thing. I know if something ever happened to me or someone in my family, I would want there to be someone who takes the matter seriously. This sort of help seems to be vital in the healing process for the victims. Gabegun123

  4. Wow! This is sad that many sexual assault and rape cases go unnoticed due to the fact that the victim does not want to be judged or blamed for the incident that has just occurred. This hurts very deep to know that you can lose trust with a friend, or in the streets, yet to lose it within the department that you as a citizen pay to protect and provide special services to you, is a entirely different level of hurt of them all. Then when they go in for their full service check up even the doctors and nurses judge you also. God I can only imagine how dirty and worthless this can make one feel. Yes I agree this is being re-victimized. Picture a woman who pregnant her husband is at work, she is home alone and has just been raped. Her baby's life is beyond life threatening yet she is scared to call the law afraid of the ignorant judgment they may have against her. Though she has one of three decisions to make or else her baby will die. One she can call the cops and possibly save her unborn child or she can wait for her husband to come home whereas she feels safer to do so and by that time her baby may not be alive. Or she can call the law and be judged for something she had no control over. Law enforcement officials really should treat those in society as if they are dealing with someone that is near and dear to them in their life. Because many lives can be saved if they had better communicating efforts with the community and incidents as such. Forensics123

  5. I think that this job to have to exam the victims of a rape case would be extremely hard to handle and that is why there is such a big turn over for these nurses that do this job. It would be even more difficult to have to examine young kids for a rape. But this job is very important so that the correct DNA is found in the victim and the person whom committed the rape will be put in jail. I really did not like reading that some rape victims are treated differently because maybe it could not be proven. No one should be treated that way in these types of cases.
