Codes, Predators, Prey and Simply Me....Who's Running the Joint?

  1. I chose to watch this video because it really impacted me on how the system works for both the prison officers and the inmates themselves. I could see the guilt in the mans face who killed the mothers son and she was not very happy at all. She was very irritated and angry trying to confront him because of what the man did he killed her son. It was very hard to forgive that man from murdering her son, she did not want to go through anymore pain and confession about how bad he hurt her and her son; her family. I couldn't believe how tragic that must have felt to experience that all at once. I am ashamed at the prison system because it is understaffed. There is no funding to afford a more secure prison. Certain people should be locked up and they should not be in the community because of their crimes. Most that I saw was within the facility; gang violence and weapons. The drugs and the toilets being flushed all at once was bad too that means everyone is flushing their drugs down the toilet because they knew someone was going to look through their stuff. I thought that the prison looked so unsafe and if I was a new employee I would strongly dislike working in a place like that; at least it was for FBI experience. The new prison officer looked like he needed to get used to a lot. I think he chose a great path and he will get into a career with the FBI when he is ready for the new career.

  3. I think its pretty sad on how these prisoners think about people and the C.O and how little they care about life.Joining gangs selling people and raping them i think that is crazy jail or prison should not be like that C.Os should have control it look liked the prisoners ran that place there should be way guards than there are 2 there should be at least 5 plus of them people shouldn't go in there on a petty crime and worry about getting rapped and killed or be forced to join gangs that is sad should be able to go in there do your time and get out making weapons killing people or being sold to people they should be on top of that more.I think it pretty neat that that gang member and the mother of the guy he killed mate up and talked it out.But people in gangs just dont care about peoples life and itys sad and they need to grow up they say they dont want there kid to fellow there foot steps but keep doing crime they have to think there kids will see that and do it to.I cant believe how they mess with these new COs make them do stuff for them no way i could do that there post to be in control.i cant believe how many drugs and weapons was in there smoking in there Cell i would like to try to work somewhere like this but it dose look like a job that would be very stressful and demanding mentally they really need to try and keep they gang member and not violet crime people away from each other.cowboys003

    1. Your absolutely right about the sadness of the mind set those inmates have about people who are different from them. Joining a gang or group of people who look out for each other is probably more safer than being alone and trying to just do your time and be done. I totally agree with you, I think that there should be at least 4 guards to every block and 3 on standby because it would be more safer that way. Letting the victim and victims family members speak with the suspect is a great tool to letting both parties find comfort. It is crazy to see and hear about the drugs and weapons that the inmates hide within the prisons. If I was that CO I would be finding me another prison to work at.-K9003

  4. I find it shocking that in a place where people have had everything one of their freedoms taken from them they still find a way to create a structure of hierarchy and are trying to climb to the top. The video showed a new prison guard and a new inmate and their experiences. The new prisoner was terrified and how to quickly grow accustom the way of living in prison or he would have been in some series trouble. I found the conversation with his roommate to be very scary. He is living in a tight bunk space with a former sex offender and has to be watching his back. When his roommate convinces him to get a tv set and have his family send him money he is only doing it for himself, but what choice did the new inmate have because it seemed like he had his best interest in mind. I feel like when someone is nice to you in prison it is hard to resist falling into a blind friendship with them and not watching your back. The video said that even after three weeks of being in prison the new inmate still knew no one but his roommate. This placed him in a dangerous situation and he needed to make friends quickly. The new prison guard had to learn the ropes and what to do and what not to do quickly. He was constantly being tested and teased. In order to work in an environment like this you will need to grow some thick skin quickly. The new prison guard stayed strict and made sure every inmate knew he meant business and was not to be messed with. The final thing I found to be interesting was when the gang leader in prison faced the mother of the son he killed. Even though he was in prison and had nothing he still was scared to face the mother. -Bulls003

    1. No matter what side of the bars you are on, in this environment you need to learn the ways of life because everything is different from the outside world. Everything from how someone treats you to where you eat in the cafeteria can change your way of life. Both the prisoner and the Correctional Officer could lose their life if they take one wrong step or say the wrong thing to the wrong person. It is a very strange profession because even though you are allowed outside the bars, you must become accompanied to the ways of the inside world. -NOsaints003

  5. Hierarchies follow us through all parts of life, starting with the structure of the family. The father (in most homes) is at the top of the family hierarchy, followed by the mother, and then the kids, and then the dog. This follows us to school where there is the Principal, then the teachers, then the teacher’s pet, then the bullies, then the rest of the students. This Hierarchy is also found in the jobs that we obtain, starting with the owner, then the boss, then his assistant, then employees, then the newbies. It shouldn’t surprise us when we see hierarchies in prison, I could go on and on about the different examples of hierarchies but there are countless ones to choose from. These structures are embedded in our genes and follow us no matter where we go. Our lives would not function as smoothly without these structures, and when one of these structures encounters another one and they disagree on something, wars break out. Now a prison hierarchy is different from a lot of these just because someone on the lower end of the structure challenges those towards the top. Now the prison hierarchy starts with the law, then goes down to the warden, then the Correctional Officers, then the Alphas who are the predators, then the Kappas who stay out of everyone’s way and don’t cause any problems, and then the Sigmas who are the prey and the punks. This hierarchy is stable most of the time in the upper half with the guards listening to those that are a higher rank then they are, and same with the bottom half where everyone stays out of the way or listens to the predators, but where this hierarchy gets all messed up is when one of the predator’s scares or forces one of the guards to do stuff for them. They touched on it in the video when the inmates are testing new guards to see how they will hold up. These prisoners are always trying to find an upper hand to any situation and will sometimes be able to get inside a weak CO’s head or may get a physical advantage over one, threaten, and then force them to do things such as sneak in items or help them keep their illegal businesses moving on the outside of the prison walls by passing messages through them or making them sneak in a phone. Because of this possible break in the hierarchy, new CO’s must learn to hold their ground and not show any weaknesses. -NOsaints003

  6. Being in a prison is really hard on the criminal and family. Unless the criminal wants to be in there and doesn't have any family members. Because I found out that some people actually like being in jail rather than being out on the streets. This video eye opening because it showed that it doesn't matter how big and tough you are. There is always something that will break down a big tough inmate, to the point where they are or about to cry. In the video it showed the leader of the Crip's going through an emotional nervous time, trying to get ready for the meeting with his victims mother and other relatives. It also shows how new correctional officers are treated by different people and at different prisons. This video was the first time I seen a leader of a gang trying to connect with the new Co, to build the good relationship. By watching this video; I gained more knowledge about how inmates intimidate the new recruits and what the new CO needs to do in order to keep control over all the inmates. Being a CO is way harder than it seems because you have to all the criminals society doesn't want and just by knowing that, tells you how much harder female Co's have it. Especially if its a all male prison because most of those inmates been in there their whole life. But Every time I watch a prison video it reminds me of how much I don't wamt to go to prison.-K9003

  7. Prison such as the Lebanon, it is the best example of survival of the fittest. Inmates uses many ways to better their chances, such as joining a gang, make friends, mutual beneficial relationships, being tougher than others, and many more. It is hard to imagine what the inmates who are new to these environments, for example how the new inmate is put into a room with another stranger, who he had no idea of been a sex offender. The new inmates or the guards are on the bottom of the food chain, where many other experienced inmates would take advantage of how green they are, because they lack experience. Some new inmates are fall prey to rape, and rookie guards are fallen into bribery, been pushed around by the rest of prison top dogs. The video stated how some inmates who never have been in a gang, but once they enter the prison system, they decided to pick a side, because all they wanted is to have someone watch their back. In this video, it is clearly stated the guards don't really have the full control over the prison, because there are many unseen criminal activities where they cannot control or enforce. The new inmate that have a experienced inmate being his room mate, who the experienced one protects the new inmates, in exchange with gifts and daily essentials. Despite the new inmates acknowledge of he was being used, but nothing at his power can he do anything, because he needs his roommate's protection, with out him he would not last very long. The new guard who wanted to control and earn respect of his lot of inmates, despite his training (the lack of) he was unable to earn any respects, but instead pushed around by the inmates. This video also shows the lack of man power on the guard's side, where it stated two prison guard per lot, but each lot contains a hundred or so inmates, so this is a big problem, because the security and response force to any danger is limited drastically. It was pretty cool to see how every now and then there is a large scale prison control searches and drills being carried out by couple hundred well trained prison guards, because it is good time to neutralize and decrease the amount of criminal acts within the prison. Despite this practice cannot completely stop the inner prison criminal activity, but it can somewhat cool it down ever so slightly. JZ003
