Bill Maher and Ageism

  1. I think as a society, we often view the elderly as a burden or annoyance. We view them as incompetent due to their age, but most of the time, that isn’t even the case. As mentioned in the video, the elderly are now increasing in age while also receiving government subsidized health care and sexual aids. These medical advancements allow people of old age to feel young and able again, therefore helping them be able to do things like drive and participate in marathons despite the length of their lifetime. But, also mentioned in the video, the elderly are mostly conservative in their political views. Why is that? In my opinion, I believe that in their youth, they aspired for the American dream and, with everything being much cheaper back then, it was attainable with hard work. However, now that college, housing, and cars are much more expensive than in the past while wages haven’t increased much since the 90s, it’s much harder for the average young adult to become financially stable and independent. This leads to the elderly believing that the millennials are lazy, fueling their conservative views on not wanting the government to provide free healthcare, housing, or food stamps. Americans of all ages need to remember that we’ve all been young and we’ll hopefully all be old, so we should quit judging others based on age. lasagna005
