Peoria County Jail and the Patrol Perspective

Peoria County Jail and the Patrol Perspective

  1. In the Peoria County Sheriff's Department there is a lot to offer in terms of a career this job requires many requirements’ such as being able to memorize large street geographical areas, along with understanding how to communicate to different people with in conflicting back rounds and understanding. Being a sheriff of this county the main focus of your time is Peoria City. As this is the highest population and most actively used area. Going through an internship with this county will help an individual to understand the court system, jail and also will help to show an individual the processes of each one which will make a person more intelligent before approaching the streets to make the best choices possible to impact an individual in a positive matter to better their lives instead of harming that individual. Working within this county an officer an always have opportunities to obtain ongoing training to better themselves with individuals they may be confronting about an offense. These individuals may also work second jobs if they obtain permission, which can help ease stress of retirement when they are looking at leaving the police force and the finical issues that their families may have. This is a well working force as they have a wide range of tasks and abilities from understanding traffic collisions to responding to officer calls that are happening within their given jurisdictions. This officers also help meet certain city demands as they will have patrol officers for police presence in cities where officials want to make sure police are seen. These officers also are very well trained when it comes to areas where they may need to com-mutate effectively as an officer coming for backup could take 25 minities going 110mph on the road. These officers are also well trained enough to be able to be inside of their own patrol car and respond to a call with only giving out information location to dispatch. Working for the sheriff’s office a lot of the time working an officer will spend a good amount of time within their patrol car due to the massive area that the sheriff’s office covers. The Sheriff's undergoes the same academy training that Illinois Correctional Officers must go through in order to work in their county. The Sherriff’s office also deals with transport of prisoners which could be driving an inmate from Peoria all the way into the state of Florida. The office also helps out with the jail if the jail needs additional officers. They also help out in the court. These officers are also mandated to follow most of the states producible instead of just having their authority to be within city limits. These are also all elected positions for these sheriffs. 1. I also thought the geographical knowledge requirements were a little daunting for somebody new to the city. That being said, it is absolutely necessary for an officer to know every street in his or her jurisdiction. This also links in to the response time for helping another officer. The geographical distance is huge, and not knowing the street to turn down can make the response time to any event even longer.-OKC001

  2. I found the presentation the deputy gave to be great. She gave amazing insight into her time as a Peoria County Sheriff’s deputy. The first thing I found to be very interesting was the fact that she was the first and only black female deputy that the county has hired ever. Given that there is more than one black woman living in Peoria County, they definitely have a ways to go in making their force diverse and representative of the community. I thought her insight on how the sectors are set up for patrol was very interesting, along with the fact that certain townships pay the sheriff’s office for their services. Not that this system doesn’t make sense, but just that I didn’t think that is how it worked. I honestly thought that if the township couldn’t afford a full time cop that the sheriff just had to patrol there; not that the township had to pay for that right. I thought the fact that officers are able to have side jobs was very cool as well. Being a police officer isn’t the most lucrative job in the world, and the fact that you can make a little money on the side is pretty nice. In regards to the other article we had to read, I am not a little shocked by the length of PTI that was discussed in the presentation. In New York their officers go through six months of training, and in Illinois it is only three or three and a half months long. This comparison kinda threw me off a little. I felt that her story about the girl in Hanna city she helped was both sad and inspiring. On the one hand, she did help that girl escape a hellish situation and get to have a better life. On the other hand, our system that is in place that looked at this girl’s situation the first two times failed that girl and kept her trapped in a situation where she was powerless. I think this story shows the power an officer has to change somebody’s life, and also how our broken system fails people who are trapped in those situations. If DCFS would have taken action the first time, then that girl could have escaped the first time and not been shot at through a door.-OKC001

    1. I was also unaware of townships having to pay for the sheriff. I was under the assumption that a sheriff was required. I also believe that Illinois's PTI should be just as long as New York's. Even if they have a bigger department than Chicago and may be doing a little more, we are still doing the same work as them and should have the same amount and type of training. zmw001

    2. I also thought it was interesting that she was the first black female deputy that the county has hired. She mentioned that she helped hire more women last year, and I hope she can keep pushing for hiring women in law enforcement. I think it is important to represent the demographics of the community when it comes to the demographics of policing. I like that she recognizes the problems in the disproportions of the demographics and that she is working on fixing that. I also think there was much to learn from that story of the girl from Hanna City. It really does show the holes in the criminal justice system; I think she should have had more power in that situation, especially since DCFS could not recognize the problem. It is sad that it took as much as the girl to get shot at for her situation to change. Scuba002

  3. The presentation that Deputy Ronda Guyton gave was very interesting and entertaining. She was very good at being both funny and serious, such as when she told the story about getting stuck on the fence and the story about her saving the girl from Hanna City. She gave a lot of helpful information about working at a police department and told recalled several experiences from her time in these departments. The story about the girl in Hanna City was just sad. The girl was being sexually abused by her step father and the only person that believed her was Deputy Guyton. It took several months before she was finally saved by Mrs. Guyton, and it was only due to her getting shot at through the bathroom door by her stepfather. It is kind of angering to know that no one would do anything in that situation. If they had decided to do something, the whole situation would have been avoided. On the other hand, I am happy that Deputy Guyton was able to take the girl away and lead her away from her abusive situation. On another note, I also thought it was interesting that police officers can have part time jobs on the side. I always thought that officers dedicated their lives to the job and that was all they did, but Deputy Guyton told about how she worked a couple odd jobs here and there during her time as a police officer. I also thought it was interesting that she was the first and is still the only black female deputy. I would have figured that out of all the black females in Peoria we would have had more than just one by now, but I was wrong. Either way, it was kind of like having a small piece of Peoria history talking to you about their life. zmw001

    1. I'm with you on how she talked to us was very realized and had humor in her speech. When she got serious though you could just feel how bad she felt. Like that girl from Hanna City. I wouldn't have thought that she would've been the only African female that has been working in the county department. Pie001,002

    2. I also enjoyed hearing about the different side jobs that the sheriff allows. That’s pretty cool of him to allow his deputies to supplement their income like that. Listening to her talk about how her specialized training will help her make money when she retires was also something that I thought was useful to know. RustyPete001

  4. Going through an internship with this county will help an individual to understand the court system, jail and also will help to show an individual the processes of each one which will make a person more intelligent before approaching the streets. When riding with the officers for the internship this helps show the daily duties that an officer will do during their shift. While riding you can see first hand how is the best way to talk to the community and the residents that live in the area that you are in charge of patoloring. Some individual officers may get permission to work a second job if they obtain permission from their boss. Doing this can help ease stress of retirement when they are looking at leaving the police force and the financial issues that their families may have. Our speaker did a great job telling us about working in Peoria County, from the jail to now working on the streets. I found to be very interesting was the fact that she was the first and only black female deputy that the county has hired ever. I really like how she told us the real life stories about the girl she had to help out in Hanna City. People don’t always think about seeing/dealing with while wanting to be a officer. Pie001,002

I agree that Deputy Guyitn did and excellent job telling us all about working within Peoria County, she did an awesome job of not only giving facts about the county but also integrating her own experiences into her presentation to make it more interesting for us. I also found it very interesting that she is still the only female, African American officer that the county has ever hired. Hopefully i the future the county will hire more people like Deputy Guytin. Pack001, Pack002

    2. I also enjoyed how Deputy Guyton explained her career both in the jail and on the streets. I liked how she also explained how her experience well help her later in life after retirement for other job opportunities. I enjoyed how she explained the story of the girl from Hannah City and how the law doesn't always go as planned. She was funny and serious both when need be and i think she gave a good presentation. behappy001

  5. Deputy Ronda Guyton did an excellent job telling us about law enforcement. I learned a lot through the stories she shared. I also learned that police officers can have part time jobs on the side if the sheriff allows it. Deputy Guyton not only works as a deputy, but she also has side jobs at a church, as an escort, at a graduation, and at football games. She also shared that her job allows her to do a lot of traveling; she is going to Wisconsin in a few days. I found it interesting that the testing for sheriff and deputy is the same. I liked the story she told about how she got caught on the fence while chasing someone, because most people just like to brag about the good things they have done without showing the real side to it. By sharing that story with us, it shows us that mistakes will happen on the job and I respect that she shared that story with us. The other story that she told about the girl in a bad situation at her home was eye opening. Deputy Guyton could not do anything until Child Services found it time to. Professor Guyton wanted the girl out of the home, but it unfortunately took the girl getting shot at for her to be taken away. I am glad the girl did not get hit by any bullets, but it is crazy that she had to remain in a dangerous situation that Deputy Guyton also acknowledged as dangerous. Deputy Guyton also talked about how effective communication skills really make a difference when it comes to policing. She did a good job answering the questions we had and she did a good job showing us how much she loves and cares about her career. Scuba002

  6. Deputy Ronda Guytin gave our class a very interesting and informative presentation. She talked about the corrections side of law enforcement and what she has to do for her job everyday. Deputy Guytin is part of the transportation department within the county sheriff's department. She told us about all of the places where she has had to travel including Florida, Indiana, and other states around the area. She was very honest about her own life experiences and her experiences on the police force, she was very easy to listen to because she was both serious and funny at the times she needed to be. She even spoke to us about a time early in her career where she was chasing a suspect with her FTO and they had to jump multiple fences while chasing him and she happened to get stuck on one of the fences. She also told us about how she is the only African American female officer that the county has hired, she is truly one of kind and was an amazing speaker to have come and talk to us. She had also told us about a story in which she had been called out to a sexual abuse instance between a daughter and the mother's boyfriend. She told us about how even though their was a of evidence that the abuse was happening that they could not find that the boyfriend had done any wrong. Deputy Guytin was distraught by that finding because she knew that the girl was telling the truth and she eventually was able to take the girl away from the abusive home after the girl had gotten shot at by the boyfriend. Her determination and dedication to the case as well as her job helped her to save and protect a girl from her abusive mother's boyfriend. Guytin also talked about how people within the criminal justice system are often allowed to have secondary jobs that do not interfere with having their job as a police officer or whatever job they have in the criminal justice system. Deputy Guytin used her won specific secondary jobs as examples for us, she does security for Shaun Livingston when he is in town and she also provides security for Peoria Central High during their basketball seasons. Being able to listen to the perspectives and experiences of Deputy Guytin was an amazing opportunity and i am very thankful we were able to have this experience. Pack001, Pack002

  7. I thought it was very cool of Officer Guyton to come and speak to our class as frankly as she did. Hearing from present and past police officers about their experiences is invaluable as we prepare for a career in law enforcement. You could tell that she had the perfect personality to a police officer. She was able to flip her script depending on who she was dealing with and at the same time not let anything get her shook. She appeared to be a very outgoing, funny, and genuine person. You won’t always find that with people who have been a cop for over 20 years. I believe that those attributes have allowed her to thrive as the only black female officer in Peoria County. If she didn’t have that “don’t take any crap” personality she might have gotten walked all over. I was very interested to learn about the side jobs she is allowed to take outside of working for the county. I wasn’t aware that the sheriff would allow her to work other occasions wearing her uniform and representing the county. Letting his officers do that kind of bridges the gap salary wise between the county and city officers. I also liked how upfront and honest she was about some of the cases she had had to work. Talking about the girl from Hanna City probably wasn’t very easy for her. I would assume that those cases really hit home. She gave some good insight into making split second ethical decisions. She brought up a good example about witnessing another officer being excessive with a suspect. The consequences from that split second decision could affect the rest of your career as she mentioned. That’s not unlike many other decisions police officer make. Another bit of information she gave that I thought was particularly useful was how having a history of making certain ethical decisions can end up helping you defend why you did or didn’t do something in a present situation. 8. i thought it was awesome the deputy officer Guyton come to Illinois central college and was a guess speaker for us. I like how she was real with us in the way she did not talk around anything Officer Guyton told it how it is. Plus how she gave us her perspective of how is was for her being the only black female work in Peoria county jail and as a deputy.she explained how she had to change her tone and how she spoke to certain people due to their different back grounds and her ability to be able to read people. Deputy Guyton also when over the different side jobs that she does like securty but she said if your going to do something like that make sure you clear the side job with the boss man. 9. Officer Guyton really opened up my eyes about women in policing. I honestly believe that it is all about the women's attitude and will power that drives them in law enforcement. I really like how much information she was able to share with the class, also I thought she did a great job of representing the Peoria County Sherriffs Office. With her being the only black female officer in her department she was able to give us a perspective that we really do not hear from as much.

I liked what officer guyton had to say. she was able to bring a real prospective to police work for women. she was was very blunt and out going with us. she had alot to say and great stories to share to use. she really opened my eyes to different part of policing. i was already thinking of going to correction but she made me want to maybe pursue a care with the sherifs office. I like here view on policing and how she was able to answer some pretty difficult questions that we had. she was also very up front about how being the only female black officer was. she was very proud of it and was able to tell us how she was treated differently. evo001

  11. I am thankful that Deputy Guytin came to talk to us. I was really surprised when she said that she was the only African american woman that is a Deputy. I figured with everything going on with the black community they would let the African american take on higher ranking positions in the field. I learnt new things about the difference between county and federal jail.Like they have to let inmates use the library to find out thing about there case. People on a 364 day sentenced they go to the county jail. when its over that day limit they have to go to federal. I like how she told us that they only get juice at the jail. Also I find it amazing how the county jail is used for hold cells before a court case. What I did not know was that the jails do church service. I like how she said that the jail takes good care of the inmates during the holiday seasons so they will not get depressed. It is interesting how she said that state and federal over ride the locals. so that must mean that federal over rides the state. When she talked about how a judge wold shut her down on the stand it was really interesting. Only because I never thought judges would do that. The story about the fence hoping was interesting because no other cops would talk about there shocking experiences.adelle002

  12. The most interesting thing that I got out of the presentation is that Officer Guyton was the first African American female officer hired in the Peoria County department and if I heard her correctly she made it sound like she is still the only African American female although the department did hire a few more females. Coming out of a county that has high number of African American in some parts in order to fairly represent the community through their department I would think that they would have at least a few African American officers. Although she is a very small minority in the department it did not seem to affect her at all through her stories that she told us anyone could see that she was a very good officer I would even say that she had a career of the ideal officer as she continue to provide her services to the community after she was off the job through working security at local sporting event and also helping out her church. 1. I also found it very compelling is that she does help out a lot with her church and different sporting events around the community I was very pleased because that really just shows that she does have the heart for this job and that she is all about her community of that she performs her duties in. I also felt like it was good to hear the story about the judge shutting down an argument to me that was very real and very honest. The only thing that I found kind of scary was there way that the streets are labeled in certain blocks and I understand why there are two ways of looking at those and locating I Street it really just depends on if you know the difference. The same popping story really shows that she is committed to what she does and I feel like that teaches a very vital lesson in policing because it most cops would not talk about experiences like that but I was very glad that she did because I feel like taught us about commitment and to slow ourselves down and learn our surroundings more.calmnthechoas001,002

  13. Having Deputy Guyton come and talk to us was really informative. She was very outgoing and I loved that. I saw a lot of myself in her. I've never really gotten the chance to listen to a woman's side of policing and hearing her experiences day-to-day was eye opening. Hearing that she's the only African American woman who is a deputy was actually shocking to me. It's 2017... But that just goes to show you how rare a woman, a woman of color at that is in the criminal justice field. I loved her attitude and her outlook. I think women in general bring a different vibe to policing. I really enjoyed hearing her stories and experiences she's had being in the field for so long. -dicaprio001

  14. I thought it was amazing that we got the chance to meet the only female black deputy. I love how real she was about everything such as the way that the streets are set up and they can be confusing which would be confusing and daunting to someone that is not from a certain area. I was also pleased to find out that there is a certain units that go to a fallen officers funeral. I was also very surprised to find out that there were seven levels of positions in the jail and I like to she broke down each one and explain to a switch type of officers did what in the jail. I also found it interesting that she goes everywhere and I found it very nice that they are always being watched by dispatchers if they have to go on a long trip and I'm glad that it is a safer situation when there is 2 of them and the car versus one because those dispatchers always know where that car is. I honestly was surprised when she told us that the pay was only $19 and some change. I also found it really interesting that that the city pays about 8 Grand more than the county. Overall I feel like it was very beneficial to see her and speak with her because I learned that it is okay to be different and to be proud of that and overcome any obstacles that are put in front of you if you really want something and she is a prime example of that. Communication in policing is key in more aspects than one it would help you down the line if you knew certain people that are always in and out of jail and it would help you to form a relationship with them and possibly keep them out of jail and I learned that discussion is really just based on a officer to officer bases. I was also glad to get information on why are inmates don't go outside anymore and I understand the safety aspect and or the time that it would take to search every single in May after they came in and I agree with just putting them in the paws I feel like it is just a better way of doing things versus just letting them be outside for a hour. If you don't have the heart for the job you are not going to excessive see that in my eyes and that's what I am majorly learned.calmnthechoas001,002

    1. I found the presentation to be very insightful and interesting as well. It is not an everyday occurrence that you get to hear that kind of raw information come from such a reliable source such as that of deputy Guyton. She had a lot to go up against starting out in the department being a black female officer, and I have immense respect for her ability to persevere and get to the position that she is in today. She was entertaining throughout the presentation which kept my attention throughout, but more importantly, she gave solid information that can be applied to future job opportunities that I hope to take advantage of in my career.

  15. I found it very insightful and definitely worthwhile to have Deputy Ronda Guyton come and speak to the criminal justice classes at ICC. She is a representation of the community, being both black and a female, overcoming both of those odds to get to the successful position that she is in today. One thing that I found very interesting that the deputy talked about during her presentation was side jobs that she took advantage of throughout her career. I am a basketball fan, and a Shaun Livingston fan as well, and deputy Guyton said she was security for Shaun when he is in town in Peoria, so I found that quite interesting, and I never though too much about having secondary jobs along with my every day full-time job, so she gave great insight. The fact that deputy Guyton is the first African-American female deputy in Peoria is both good and bad in my opinion, the bad being that there are not more officers like herself. There should be more officers like Guyton, and the police force as well as the “higher-ups” such as herself should resemble the community, and having so few women, and especially African-American women, is not doing a great job of doing so. This does not mean just start gathering up women of color, it simply means that they have the same potential as the white male standing next to them, and they should be treated as so, getting the same opportunity, as Ronda Guyton has shown us that if you work hard you can make it to wherever you want to go. The Hannah City story about the girl being sexually abused showed me how smart and dedicated deputy Guyton is to her work, and this is inspiring to me. She knew deep down that she was right about the girl telling the truth when no one else believed her, and she did everything in her power to help that girl. Stories like this one completely shatter the inaccurate misconceptions of police in today’s society, as Guyton went above and beyond just to help a girl that she knew was in trouble. Officers such as Guyton are what we should see when we look at our departments, not the couple of “bad apples” that cause most of the problems that occur throughout the system. I am glad that deputy Ronda Guyton came to give her presentation, and I found her insight to be both informative and encouraging of police and their daily work.

  17. When the deputy from the sheriff's office came it was an honor to hear her speak. It enlightened and molded my understanding of the County Jail. Their main priority is to maintain the safety and security of the residents of the county jail. The qualifications for a correctional officer is that you have to be 21 years of age, a U.S. citizen, high school graduate, and a resident of Peoria County. The advancement opportunities are ranked from highest to lowest in the order listed, Superintendent, Assistant Correction Supervisor, Deputy Correction Supervisor, Sergeant, Transport Officer, Field Training Officer, Correctional officer. Their activities consist of taking inmates to and from medical, monitoring them, and ensuring the jail is safe. I also learned that state and federal laws override your local laws. She said that a way she patrols is by getting people to do what she wants them to do in order to provide a safe environment. She said communication is the key to this aspect. Overall she was funny, open, and honest which made it easier to follow along with her presentation. MSSA002

  18. I think the presentation Deputy Guyton gave was very beneficial to both students wanting to go into that field and those who've decided on others. She was a part of the transportation department at the county sheriff's department. It's important to gain knowledge and become educated on what county deputies do and the roles and tasks they have to do on a daily basis. I found it interesting how she was the first female African American deputy in the Peoria county are. I love how she expressed how she felt about that and how she was very confident in the job title. She mentioned how at times she had that backfire on her, but at the end of the day she always went home to a loving family, feeling accomplished. I believe she is a great representation of what Peoria's deputies and other law enforcement officers should act and handle themselves; respectful, honest, and willing to help the community as a whole. I found it interesting how she said they have 8-10 deputies on duty throughout the day and early morning shifts because that is the most common time for crime to take place. She explained how each deputy had a specific area they policed at once. I also thought it was important how there has to be two offices in a vehicle for every 100 miles, while transporting inmates. This is to ensure no foul play takes place and that everyone is safe at all times. Guyton was very open and honest about her life experience and it allowed me to gain a better understanding of her day to day life. When she explained the story about the girl from Hannah City, you could tell that she was affected by it and it's a story she holds close to her heart. By explaining this story to the class, it showed us that not all police procedures are handled in the right ways, in the right span of time. She was struggling with her own gut instinct and the law, there was very little she could do without threatening her job. You could hear in her voice the compassion for her job and the situations she faces. She never gave up on the girl, and at the end she got justice for her. After hearing her speak about her job and how much she enjoyed it, it gives others an honest outlook om what could possibly be to come in some of our own futures. It was a great presentation. behappy001

  20. Deputy Ronda Guytin came in on March 30 and gave our class a very interesting presentation which also provided a lot of information. She just started off first about herself and she gave information about the corrections side. She talk about her great accomplishments. What she does today is in the transportation department within the county sheriff’s department. She explained how she has to travel quite a bit now and that on Friday she was leaving again for another state. She explained that you have to be twenty one years old to get on the force. For corrections you don’t have to have any college to get the job. You can just have high school education and all you have to do is wait until your 21. The best story I Felt she told was when she was trying to chase after a criminal and she got stuck on the fence. Her pant leg was caught and she couldn’t get over it and he partner had to help her. That would have been embarrassing at the time especially because she is a women and they don’t get much credit in that field by guys. She was very interesting to hear talk because she was very engaged in what she says so it made it real easy to listen. It was so sad when she told us the story about how the girl was being mistreated and abused. It was sad because the little girl was going through so much and nobody would believe her besides Deputy Guytin. This just describes the person Guytin is she said she believed that little girl from the bottom of her heart and that she wouldn’t give up on her. She gave the little girl her business card to call her if she ever need anything. The little girl ended up calling her again because her mom’s boyfriend ended up shooting at her while she was locked in the bathroom. Her judgment and dedication just shows that she is very good at what she does. It also just shows that she is determine on whatever she does especially where she comes from. Mrs. Guytin could have easily became an idiot and just done nothing with her life but as the person she is she wanted more and wasn’t going to settle. This women was very inspiring she tells you how it is and if you set your mind to it than anything can be accomplished. The thing I thought was the coolest that she does is when Sean Livingston is back in town she does security for him. I’m much honored to hear her talk and learned many things that I didn’t know before. CRC001,CRC002
