Emile Durkheim....Simply Explained

Comments

  1. Explained in this video is Emile Durkheim's research on Capitalism. It makes people wealthier, but with that comes feeling miserable. In the late 1800's he was noticing change in the country he lived in. People were killing themselves. No exact rates were given but it was mentioned that suicide rates in Britain were twice as high as the rates in Italy. However, Denmark's rates were four times higher than rates in the UK. Emile Durkheim believed that there were five reasons as to why people were so unhappy in society: (1)individualism, (2)excessive hope, (3)we have too much freedom, (4)Atheism, (5)weakening of the nation and of the family. He felt that the decisions we make as individuals ultimately make or break us and that the pressure of that in itself is often very stressful for an individual, especially if one is to fail. Capitalism gives people excessive hopes for the things they could possibly achieve in life, and while one could have everything they want at that moment in time there is the lingering idea of what the better things out there could be like. With us as individuals having the amount of freedom we have, we are often too uncertain, too busy, or too tired to decide what we want in life. He also believed that religion was good for society because it has a lot of good things to offer and Capitalism has yet to find something to replace it. Lastly, he points out that families often drift apart as time passes seemingly due to the pressures of society.White789

  2. Emile Durkheim main focus is to relax the human mind by isolating the 5 crucial factors that contemplates the mind. He is a philosopher who was appointed to a powerful college instructor position. He found that some areas of people were more likely than others to take their own lives. For example, men with single and wealthy lives are more at risk of suicide than women who are poor and married. In his five factors of individualism, excessive hope, we have too much freedom, capitalism undermined social norms, atheism, and weakening of the nation and of the family; Emile gives multiple examples of how it affects the human mind to where they are unable to function properly. Areas of people with stable social ties had low suicide rates. In today’s society suicide rates have gone up do to the high volume of drugs and the lack of obtaining a job & family. A lot of these advantages and disadvantages that leads to suicide comes from the amount of freedom. From what I have been reading in books and articles the past couple of weeks about Emile Durkheim and suicide, I have found that suicide is a planned process more than unplanned because the cause of suicide is significant events prior the suicide attempt. That drives the person mind into a corner to where they tried both fight or flight technique and ended up with negative results. So over the years that Emile has been studying this particular area it benefits the readers to better understand the human mind and how it functions under pressure.-NIKE789
