Choice Theory and The Wire

Comments

  1. Choice theory is the explanation of human behavior based on internal motivation.Criminal behavior will happen after weighing the consequences and the benefits of their actions. In the wire, Omar is a guy who steals drugs and money from Avon’s gang. In the scene that I watched, shows a great example of choice theory. First reasoning is his judgment is clouded by his despise for the Barksdale crew. Omar already hates the crew already so he obviously is gonna make his life more hard because of the hatred they have towards each other. For example he is going wanna rob his houses or steal there stuff because the judgment is clouded. Stating that Omar’s crew asks why do they need to keep hitting up the Barksdale stash houses, even though there is more vulnerable targets to go to.Meaning they are just going with the house they have robbed in the past even though there may be other houses that have more stuff in them. Choice theory has many range of components. For example they make varied decisions based on the type of crime they will be committing. In the video Omar made a choice of trying to break into a house, resulting in having a shootout happen with his gang and another gang.In the result the choice they made may have been a little too complicated in a sense because it didn’t turn out the way they would liked it too. All the choices you make are going to have consequences the fact is whether you get caught or you get away with it. Smile123

In the HBO tv serious The Wire there are four different members of a gang. They were plotting on robbing a stash house for drugs. They knew it was a heavily guarded stash house. But they chose to rod it. That is choice theory. In the process all was going well until a person on guard out back saw them and alerted everyone in the building what was happening. Then a gun fight ensued between the two different parties. In the process one lady that were with the group of four robbing the stash house got shot in the head. That was a consequence of robbing the stash house that happened. Which is the other side of choice theory. At the begging of the clip the one lady mentioned why they were going to rob this specific stash house. The one guy said just because, he wanted to rob that exact one just because he could. He mentally made that decision that he was going to rob that stash house. That is exactly what choice theory is. He made the decision beforehand that he was going to rob that specific house. He then wayed the benefits and consequences. He thought that getting the drugs or money would out way everything. But he probably knew that they could get shot and die or possibly arrested. The consequence did happen though when that girl got shot and killed in the middle of the firefight when they were trying to flee.

In the clip of the episode wire, four people were planning to take from another group of people. The show was filmed in Baltimore and it was about how a lot of people just wanted power and money in my opinion. That’s what the four people who were trying to rob, what look to be like drug dealers. Clearly the house that the people wanted to rob was a drug house and they just wanted to take what they had and sell the drugs theirself. The made the choice that they could probably go in, not deal with a lot of problems and walk out with the drugs. It all started out smooth, then next thing you know gunfire for about two minutes. The leader of the group was the dark skin guy with the big coat on. Evidently, he believed that he could just walk into a drug house, on a day that they didn’t believe wouldn’t have any problems and look what happened. He thought he made a rational choice. First, they were staking the place out to find out the rotations of the people who came and went on a daily. See who never left, who was always outside and what times. They thought they all had it planned out. Thought it was gone be somewhat easy, but no. You never know who’s going to be around watching what you’re doing. In the process of trying to rob the drug dealers, they lost a good friend that they cared about. One’s “rational choice”, sometimes isn’t always the best choice. Fireboy123,Smile123.DC123,trojan123

    1. According to the information you guys provided it appears criminals go through a sort of thought process or choice analysis. It would stand that a criminal or any other person would pick the most rational choice in the instance. This choice may be determined by both psychological or social factors. In the example you guys provided it appears that the rational decision concluded on wasn't the right one at all. This shows that any choice made can be a chance and it is up to each individual to decide which option poses the most benefit with the least amount of risk. Group 2 Ghost123

In the movie The Wire we see a group of four criminals plot a plan to rob a house full of gangbangers. They do this I guess with rational choice theory because they discuss what will happen, the pros/cons, etc. I don’t think they made rational choices though because they were stupid enough to be criminals and try to rob a house full of gangbangers with guns that shoot sideways. Unfortunately for the black lady the group decides that getting away with no money is worth her life. I would not classify this as rational thinking because I am damn sure they didn’t discuss this ahead of time. I have my doubts that they actually thought about what they may face on the inside because they were very unprepared and lacking firepower/tactics. The crew thought they had their scout man figuring out how to get into the house, but that quickly turned incorrect when they failed to completely search the house. They got ambushed in their own ambush, “What is this foolishness?”- A. White. The crew did not think out what they may find on the inside or be up against rather all they saw was the reward aka the money bags. They got brainwashed into thinking that this would be an easy operation until they dropped they money and ran the heck away. If they had used the rational choice theory then they would have scoped out the house better, known exactly how many people would be there, brought better firepower, known how long they may have until the cops come, etc. Therefore they did not use this theory unlike what Baccaria would claim. They failed to complete all the steps he designed so they accomplished nothing and got nothing. Fireboy123,Smile123.DC123,trojan123

    1. In this last paragraph, I do think your right about the rational thought of how they weighed the options to rob the house and they did plan as a group. The second part of the paragraph I would agree with you because in life or death instances, fight or flight takes over and makes unconscious decisions for you. It would be considered a natural instinct to survive. Overall I believe you are right on with what you said. I don’t think rational choice is not the same as planning a robbery anything similar to that. I think its more along the lines of an individual making a choice with a thought to make it right or wrong in their own sense. Jeeper123
