OK and Female Incarceration....Your Thoughts?

  1. After reading these charts, the first thing that stood out to me was that in 2010, the number one reason women are incarcerated is due to possession and obtaining CDS. The second reasons are due to distribution CDS. Most women are incarcerated for non-violent. More than 50% of women in prison stated that at home someone had a drinking problem. 46.8 percent stated someone in their family someone had a drug problem. Mental and medical health is another major problem in prisons. 62 percent of women have or have had been treated for mental illness. In 2010, there were more whites than blacks. Out of 257 women, they had 760 children and over half of them are under the age of 18. I think that all children need their mothers during their childhood over the course of their 18 years. According to these slides, Oklahoma has the highest incarceration rates for women and Kansas has the lowest. To me, I find it kind of odd that Oklahoma has the highest rates; I would think states along the bordered would have the highest incarceration rates. In Oklahoma, some women spend less than a year in prison and the average stay is 1.9 years. 1,271 women completed their full-term sentences. The women who are discharged or completes their sentences had the need for a substance abuse treatment. Family history is most likely the number one reason women need up incarcerated. The next one would be race and ethnicity.
