Major Sociological Paradigms

Comments

  1. This article I found very interesting. First off I learned a word I never heard of which was Paradigm. It's cool how there are words out there that you've never heard of but you do the meanings everyday! What stuck out to me about this article was the fact everything she said seemed like a short and easy way to explain Sociology. The approaches were cool learning about. Durkheim, Marx, and Weber all their theories were so different from one another yet so brilliant! Durkheim, saw society as a malfunction. Which I felt there's not a better way to explain society. Especially when it comes to race! I believe race is the root of society's malfunctioning. Symbolic Interaction, personally, the best Theoretical Approach. In the video she explained how Symbolic Interaction looks at the world we create when we assign meaning to interaction and objects. What I like is with this particular theory Weber felt like Sociology should focus on people's individual social situations and the meaning they attach to them. I feel like if more people thought about this approach and really took it into consideration we would have a better understanding with each other as a society. Which means less social conflict.

    1. I agree this video opens my eyes on the world we live in there is soo much to learn we only know so little. The video says a lot of things and teaches us new things i for sure never knew. She talks to fast for all the information she is giving us due to me not really knowing much about sociology before this video. Opens my eyes to the little things we do has a lot of meaning. The topics she brings makes me want to watch more of her videos and learn more information on what she finds important about sociology.

    2. I agree with you. This video I learned a few new things. It went deeper into the history of sociology a little bit.It was cool to learn about all the people too who had something to do with the theories. I strongly agree with you that race is a huge reason we have issues today because it seems like every time we turn around we are hearing something about how one race is not getting any justice then we compare how other races are treated and why we are not treated the same way. We all are the same just look different from one another. I like Weber's theory as well and the focus on individual's social situations. It was great getting a better understanding on sociology in a quick video.

  2. This video is very interesting showing the world around us in a different lense. This video is very complex with the time the lady was given. What i thought was very interesting is on how the video started was stating that there is not one answer to the nature on how society really is. Society is people with different interests. Paradigm is a model for how we think, concepts and theories that frames our perspective on a topic. Theoretical paradigm is fundamental assumptions sociologists have about the social world that guide our thinking and research. The video explained how raw facts doesn't really give the descriptions interpreted. “All scientific disciplines make assumptions about the world, and scientific disciplines use different perspectives, depending on the question their asking”. Sociology looks at society at all levels, at all scales, from huge to tiny macro looking big to micro looking small. Structural functionalism is society as a big organism states Emile Durkheim. A parent tries to teach their child social function by taking them out and showing them the world around them and how to act. Social functions are manifest which means there's obvious consequences with a particular structure and how latent is another social function that are intended or unrecognized school. Change is not always good. Conflict theory composed group; change is fundamental. Karl Marx states the history of all previous societies has a history and class struggle. Race conflict theory and gender conflict theory is looked at as macro which have always been big and important topics to the history of us and the environment we live in. Symbolic interaction such as a wave we made mean goodbye, made with everyday social interactions. The world we live in has so much to it and there is always something new to learn. We only know so little to the big picture.

    1. I like how you gave your opinion about the video, but I noticed that you talked about the main points in the video which helpful. In the video she talked fast but she made very valid points on how paradigm is involved in sociology. There is a way of understanding how to connect what you already know to what you learned from the video. It is a bigger understanding of the world and the people in it. I agree with on how the race conflict and gender conflict are major problems in our society. If others had better understanding or were open to understand the opinion and thoughts of others there would great progress in society.

  3. I’ve never heard of paradigm before watching this video now I know that it means set of concepts and theories that frames your opinion. Even though she talks fast I think she did a great job of explaining what it is and what it contains. Paradigm contains three elements structural functionalism, conflict theory and symbolic interactionalism. Each one of these are connected to each other. Everything that she said had to do with sociology it was a different way of looking at it. If everyone watched this video took what they learned and applied to their lives, there would be less conflict. Though I believe that not all people would because there are always going to be some individuals who don’t want to do certain things causing some sort of conflict in the situation. I like that she included well known people in the video to express the connection they had to sociology. I think the theory that caught my attention was the race conflict theory. I say this because we still have major problems when it come to race as a nation. It had always been this way and yes, our world has come together in some sense of not being divided but in some cases like the race conflict theory and the gender conflict theory the world can be divided. It a common problem that many are aware about, the problem is we have yet to find a permanent solution. To me paradigm is how you view the world because it is used all the time unknowingly we have opinions about many things and use symbolic interaction in infinite ways it’s a way of communication. It is what keeps our society going this meaning it defines the American life. Which is free speech we can say what we feel it is a right. Therefore, we are individuals who can think what we want because we are in charge of our own mindset.

    1. Yes! I really appreciated her description of the different paradigms also. They are not opposing approaches that do not relate to each other, but instead three different ways to look at the same issue that all compliment each other and offer different ways of seeing the situation. She did a good job of demonstrating the importance of having different lenses for viewing sociology on macro and micro levels.

    2. I left out some of my comment, so here it is in it’s entirety:

Yes! I really appreciated her description of the different paradigms also. However, I think they are a little different than you described them as in the end of your comment. It is true that we should have the right to free speech, but I don’t think the paradigms actually are different opinions, opposing, or disagreeing with each other. Instead, they are three different ways to look at the same issue that all compliment each other and offer different ways of seeing the situation. You make a great point though! She did a good job of demonstrating the importance of having different lenses for viewing sociology on macro and micro levels.

    3. I thought that it was interesting hearing about the different paradigms as well, but it should be noted that the line between looking at something with a perspective and looking for specific answers is very thin, but can have massively differing results. If I did a study on the inverse effects of video games on children, I would likely get inaccurate results because I am expecting the games to have inverse effects on children. The study that would be less biased would be the effects of video games on children.

  4. She did an excellent job summing up the three different sociological perspectives that were introduced in the textbook. When she talked about how both answers to the question were correct based on the situation and context, it totally clicked with me how there can be three different ways to view sociology and have them all be cohesive. The different paradigms do not disagree with each other in terms of how they believe we should view the world sociologically. Instead, they compliment each other and allow the viewer to see an even more dynamic aspect of society they might not have been able to see without all three “lenses” that the different views provide. The speaker also explained that in every scientific practice, multiple approaches are utilized when data is encountered, so sociology is no less “scientific” or “definitive” as any other scientific studies. In fact, with sociology, the different viewpoints are not only beneficial, but necessary. Because sociology looks at both the macro and micro aspects of our culture, different lenses are required: Imagine trying to observe a cell or bacteria with a telescope or study the skies with a microscope - it simply would not work. We must use the approach that best fits the scenario.

I really liked her description of social dysfunction. It is easy to hear the term and interpret it as being used to describe only negative things. However, something can be both sociologically functional and dysfunctional at the same time, it just depends on which issue you are looking at.

I also found her description of symbolic-interactionism to be interesting. Every term, action, symbol, etc has no real meaning without the context that the communicators apply to it. Just like hand gestures bear different meanings in different parts of the world, all interactions and social phenomena have meaning that is entirely dependent on the giver and receiver.

    1. I too liked the description of social dysfunction. It was explained that something could be both sociologically functional and dysfunctional at the same time. Do you think that all sociological issues are both a function and a dysfunction? I personally would say “yes.” Even though we may not see a drawback in a certain aspect of society now, I believe eventually we see both the good and the bad of different policies, inventions, or expectations. In addition, I agree that we must use the best approach for the given scenario, but I also think we could use two approaches in combination, such as conflict theory and symbolic-interactionism. Maybe a conflict stems from the misunderstanding been the assigned meanings of an object, gesture, or practice between two different groups of people. In this case, two paradigms could be used to examine the problem. Even though three different paradigms exist, I do not believe they are mutually exclusive when it comes to using them. 2. I agree of how she explained the three different ways to view the world in sociology. That’s really helped me because that took a lot of information and put it into three categories. This helped me understand and get a better grasp on the subject that I was personally struggling to find. The way she explained a lot of things help me be translating into an easier to understand way and then gave examples. This is a very good video and should be watch by anyone going into sociology as it explains important basic points that are essential to understand sociology as a whole. –TheMarshall012

    3. Yes, I totally agree with you on the subject of social dysfunction. It was a little bit of an eye opener to think about how many of the sociological problems in our world can be looked at from both sides. Therefore, within every problem there are people in our world that feel strongly about both sides of the problem. I found it so interesting to hear her talk about the issue of poverty and unemployment in our society and how there are people in our world that view it as a positive as well as a negative. Great review! -THEARSONIST012

    4. I honestly think this post is really good. I like how you said that the different paradigms may be different but they work together and are cohesive. I don't think some people realized what paradigm meant in some of the other posts I read but you worded it very well. I also agree that the different viewpoint are necessary. If we all saw things in the same way then what kind of society would we be? Probably a very boring one. If everyone agrees on everything then paradigms wouldn't even be a thing. We need different perceptions because it creates the dynamic in our society to promote stability and social order.

    5. I do agree with you a lot on how she went about explaining things in this video. she went kind of fast when explaining things but she was able talk about the different perspectives and how they can work together. On the other hand I do also agree when you said something can be both sociologically functional and dysfunctional at the same time, it just depends on which issue you are looking at. Which is so true! i also believe being open minded is a huge key on how you look at the functions. -ILIKETURTLES012

  5. When I first learned that Sociologists have to have assumptions that guide their thoughts and research, I thought it was rather odd because I know that forming assumptions sets up biases. Although I now know that these assumptions are needed to judge societies and the people living within those societies, I have to wonder if our assumptions limit what we choose to see in the world or how we choose to view a single problem. In a way sociologists, who try to study society and make sense of natural patterns, are further contributing to the patterns of society because they as humans have make assumptions, and they hold beliefs and ideas about the world. Whether these ideas are accepted or rejected largely depends on others. Usually something in science is not accepted until there is a great amount of evidence to prove it and there are many supporters who hold that same common belief. I believe that a good Sociologist should try to approach an issue with an open mind, giving equal consideration to all three Sociological Paradigms. We cannot always use the structural functionalist approach to explain the larger world because in theory the world is fundamentally functional and stable, but in reality the world is not this way. This makes it rather hard to explain change and conflict. This is why we need the conflict theory. Personally, I think this theory is the most useful because as humans with many different opinions and views there is always going to be someone who is not satisfied or happy with their life or the state of the world in which they live. Not everyone will agree one-hundred percent with everything, so there is always going to be conflict that needs to be dealt with. Understanding conflict as a major part of society makes dealing with problems easier when they arise. I do believe, however, that it is equally important to consider individuals’ roles in society through the symbolic interaction approach because society is truly a product of everyday social reactions among people. Society is understood by studying individuals and individuals are best understood by studying society. Sociology is a very interconnected discipline that covers basically all of human life, so it only makes sense that there needs to be multiple perspectives and tools to approach any given situation. 1. Yes, I agree to the fullest when I heard they had to has an assumption prior it made me raise an eyebrow. I know I make assumptions about people and if I make a negative assumption about a person before I fully get to know them if my assumption was something negative I would be displaying that on my face and tone when I speak to that person. I agree that they should approach an issue with an open mind because I feel like if you don't it can affect how you look at that issue rather they admit it or not i feel like it do because I know me. Yes, if you understand conflict then you will understand a lot more stuff that happen in life.

  6. The video I just watch was very informative and it really explained Sociology in a way I could understand. This video is one I think that anyone going into sociology as it explains some of the main things used in sociology today like Marxism and what it is and class conflict, etc. I believe it will really help me personally in the class that I will be taking and I feel as if I will be going back to this video later in the semester as I may need a reminder of the basics. That is what this video explains. The basics is what everything is built of and a building cannot stand on a faulty base. Sociology is everywhere in the world today. It can explain many things like how external forces shapes a person such as place of birth, religion, school, etc. This video also touches on functions and latent functions like school and how they teach but also how it trains a workforce that follows authority. It really explained a lot of this that will help me understand thing in the class that I did not before like how Karl Marx looked at things and why people like that interpretation. Sociology is everywhere a shapes how every person is and will be. –TheMarshall012

    1. I agree that this video was very informative, not to mention entertaining! I have always found Marxism extremely interesting, as it was an idea that the majority of citizens got behind, but worked much better in theory rather than practice. Within the Structural-Functional approach, latent and manifest functions are the focus. I remember the meaning of those terms because I can relate them to a Psychology course I took last year in which we learned about latent and manifest interpretations of dreams, introduced by Sigmund Freud! -CSP012

  7. This video was very interesting. I’m starting to believe all these videos are going to be interesting. This video taught me a new word which I never meant which is paradigms. If someone on the streets would have told me that word I wouldn’t have had the slightest clue on what that word means. Low and behold it only means the way we think about things which is neat. I like how she said “is 6 feet tall? “because whenever I hear that I just automatically assume it is tall. I never heard of a raw fact either, but I see raw facts are important. Knowing symbolic interaction is big because that’s basically saying we put meaning on to interactions. Such as a high five mean good job, or a pat on the back mean good job and we only know that because we put that meaning on to those interactions. Paradigms have 3 elements that everyone must know to be aware of paradigms. The 3 elements consist of structural functionalism, conflict theory and symbolic interactionalism. As I mentioned above symbolic interactionalism is an easy element to understand because that one has the easiest examples as I mentioned above. There are 2 types of questions that you can ask the first one is micro and macro. Macro are questions that are serious, and they are big. Micro are smaller questions that include an individual. Structural functionalism just means stable patterns. Then there are manifest and latent functions. Manifest are intending consequences such as people go to work for a pay check. Then there are latent functions which are consequences that are not intended. Such ad going to work can also help you make friends and build a social life. Conflict theory imagines society as having 2 groups. I feel like all groups are pretty interesting and all 3 theories are some things I would look into in my free time.

    1. I feel like you had a really good understanding of this video even though it was so fast paced. The "is 6 feet, tall" was an interesting comment to me too. We just assume that it is because it's a big number, but is it really? I also agree with how going to work is a latent function. You're there to make money and provide means for yourself, but in the mean time there are opportunities to meet people different than you, as well as similar. It's good grounds for social interaction and building a social life. I've had jobs like that before. I agree that all of these videos are proving to be pretty interesting.

  8. This video was definitely focused on a fast-paced learning style so that we could learn the most information about sociology, paradigms, and the social constructs that make up the world we live in today. I remember briefly going over some of this information in class. I recall learning that the structural-functional was “macro”, which meant it focused on a large-scale part of society, which she explained in the video. I also found it interesting that the social-conflict theory was another “macro” theory. It made sense that some people in society actually rely on people in poverty to keep their own fortune and success. I also understood why it was considered a major conflict though, because why would people want to keep a tradition around that was harmful to others? In class we learned that other debates of conflict fall in this category, ones that weren’t mentioned in the video, such as gender research, race research, and queer theory. All these social-conflicts are huge in all communities right now, so I think it’s important that we learn more about them. And the last theory is interesting as well, symbolic interaction, otherwise known as why we give meaning to certain things, and how. For example, a handshake as a greeting or a wave as hello. I think this video just touches up on a lot of things we learned in chapter 1 of sociology in class.

    1. Instead of the video being fast-paced so that we could learn the most info in a short amount of time, I think it was to keep our minds awake as viewers. I think Crash Course itself is aware of the fact that many students in today's society get bored with the same old lectures, so they make their videos, loud, entertaining, and fast, to keep us on our toes. I'm happy that you recalled words used in class, that were also mentioned in the video, I think this made it easier for me as well, when trying to follow along because the words she was using were familiar to me.

I learned that paradigms which are models on how you think about things, a set of theories and concepts that frame ones perspective on a topic. It is something to think about the way social conflict theory looks at things. You made a good point about the poverty to keep others success and fortune running. These theories do give you a different way of thinking about everyday issues and can be very useful I look forward in applying some of these theories into my lifestyle and way of thinking. 9. This video, hosted by Miss. Nicole Sweeney is a crash course on the subject of Sociology. As the video begins Nicole already throws us the question of what exactly society is. What is it she asks? Could it be something set in stone, something that works perfectly like a well operated machine. She also gives us several other options of what our society could really be. However, we come to understand that none of these options are correct, or even incorrect. Our society is one and many explanations all at the same time. Sociology and sociological questions have no right or wind answer. Therefore a bias based on facts can be very influential when looking at Sociological problems. Nicole dives into the details of what exactly a paradigm is and begins to explain what social bias is. She begins with speaking about what the word paradigm really means. The definition of the world simply means a normal pattern, or way in which something happens that can be somewhat expected. Therefore, Sociological paradigms are patterns in our society. After her initial introduction and small overview, Nicole begins to begin her crash course on the very wide subject of Sociological Paradigms. She explains that a personal bias while studying subjects within Sociology is not truly a bad thing. In fact, a bias is actually very important. Nicole even makes a point to say that a bias can be an important thing to have with any subject throughout our daily lives. We might think that subjects like math and science and other things are “set in stone” we might say. Or at least they basically only have one answer, right? Therefore we probably only have one way that we can look at these issues and subjects if there is one answer that we will all arrive at. However, Nicole suggests otherwise. She explains that yes, many subjects such as math and science can have more established answers and conclusions. However there is always more than one way that we can look at things. -THEARSONIST012

  10. I love Crash Course videos! They might be the only reason I made it through APUSH and AP Psych. Anyways, I think this video was very well timed for our class, as the host helped cement the ideas we covered in class. I really appreciated her review of the three main theoretical approaches the Sociology. Structural-Functional was founded by Dirkheim (among others) and is based on the assumption that common practices stabilize society. Social-Conflict theory was founded by Marx and is based on the mindset revolving around inequality and change regarding mostly gender, religion, and race. Both Structural-Functional and Social-Conflict are macro studies, which means they are viewed through entire races or populations. Symbolic-Interaction, on the other hand, is a micro-study, focusing on the individual, not the population. Symbolic-Interaction, founded by Weber, focuses on those individual interactions and the "shared reality created through those interactions." -CSP012

  11. Wow, this video had a lot of information in it and used a lot of big words but actually did make sense. I didn’t really know what a paradigm was but now I understand that it is a pattern or typical example that shapes your perspective of things. I think it was beneficial to learn that Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, and Max Weber had a huge impact of introducing the ideas of structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. I like how the woman explained that there are really endless amounts of paradigms in the world and how important theoretical paradigms can be to sociology. Durkheim’s belief of structural functionalism makes a lot of sense to me and is something I can relate to a cell in a body. He believed that there are many parts of society that have to work together to like organelles in a cell to keep it in good health and functioning well. Like organelles in a cell, different aspects such as religion and the division of labor work together in society’s complex system to promote stability and social order. The only bad thing about structural functionalism is that it doesn’t explain change well and can’t explain why change can be good or bad. Karl Marx, though, later came up with conflict theory which explains conflict between classes and the reason for social inequality. Race and gender conflict theories were both also very important in American history and are clearly still present today. Apart from these two theories, Max Weber had a different theory that was micro. He believed that it is important to focus on people’s personal paradigms and the meaning they attached to them to understand the big picture. I think all these ideas make sense but I agree mostly with Max Weber because how can you understand the big picture if you don’t know the little details. For example, you would never be able to do the quadratic formula if you didn’t know how to do addition. This video really opened my eyes to paradigms and how different people think.

    1. I could not agree more with what you had to say on these three takes. They all make sense in their own way, and flaws could be found in each. The difference between the micro and the micro approaches though provide a lot of insight into the way we live every day life. I liked what you said about agreeing with Max Weber’s approach the most also. To understand a whole, you need to first understand a part. If you want to fully grasp why a part of society does something as a whole, you need to first look at the individual. (Patriots012)

  12. In the video Major Sociological Paradigms I learned that a paradigm is a model on how you think about things, a set of theories and concepts that frames ones perspective on a certain topic. Theoretical paradigms I learned are the key in sociology; they are the assumptions of the world by sociologists. These assumptions are what guides their research and thinking. They mentioned raw facts which are descriptions of reality. Taking different perspectives can change the questions a person wants to ask, raw facts need perspective in order to be useful. Sociology looks at the large and small things the Macro and Micro. When talking about the large or big it is the Macro using a broad focus on structures that form society. Micro is dealing with the small more on interactions between people; the Macro and the Micro are always connected. There are three main theoretical paradigms that I learned they are the following structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactions. Structural functionalism was originated by Emile Durkheim; he took society as an organism all of different parts that need each other to function in good health. Latent functions are unrecognized or unintended, manifest functions are intended or obvious consequences of a structure. Conflict theory was advanced by Karl Marx, his theory society has different classes based on relationships of production W.E.B Dubois first stated race conflict theory which who also was a sociologist. The final is symbolic interaction this deals with micro questions which was from Max Weber who focused on understanding. This looks at the world created when one assigns meaning to object or interactions. Just me012

  13. Crash Course videos are THE best at catching my attention!! After our last class, I wasn’t sure if I clearly understood the Major Sociological Paradigms but now I think I have more than a better understanding of the material. It is so weird, yet nice that sociology can have a variety of answers for just one thing at hand. I love the fact that in this video, it was evident that there are so many ways in which sociologists pick apart things that go on in society. At first I thought the paradigm that would work best for all situations was the structural functionalist perspective. I feel it made most sense for us to try to understand the world and things going on in them in a way that was based and influenced off of individual pieces of society working together to provide the function. I’m glad that when watching this video I could see not only the positive, but also the negative sides of using this paradigms. Change is constant especially in the fast pace type of society that we live in now. If one thing changes, in the structure.. Then it’s entire function is thrown off. I am ALL for change, so the fact that this is one of the biggest downfalls to this perspective makes me understand why sociologists can view the same issues using different approaches. After watching this video I am actually intrigued in the fact that sociologists change their approach, depending on what they are trying to understand. It really reminds me of when people fall ill. There are many different illnesses out there, and with that means that there are different techniques used to cure them. There isn’t one cure out there that is used for ALL illnesses, so why would we search for answers in human behavior by using only one approach?

    1. You bring up a great point about different perspectives and ways of thinking. I think about your comment related to illness and the various types of treatment. What if we were so stuck in our ways that we could not entertain the disruptions that come from clinical trials that may enhance our knowledge and ways to manage disease. We have to be open up to different thought processes and ways of looking at things at the macro and micro level to better improve the societal gains associated with things like clinical trials. Like you said, sociologists are willing to change their approach to help them understand a certain concept. There is an understanding that conflict is not all bad but can rather lead to change.

  14. Sociology is a type of science that deals with social problems. The paradigms help us understand things like: if this happens, this is likely to happen next. This is consistent with structural functionalism where one change causes a change in another. One might consider the intended and unintended consequences of actions in society as mentioned in the theories that include manifest, latent, and dysfunction. One of the most interesting to me to consider at this time is conflict in society. In many ways, many humans try to avoid conflict but it bound to happen because we are competing for resources in society whether that be relationships, employment, equality, etc. Like she mentioned, technology is often well received in society and we are looking for ways to be more efficient but we also don't think about the loss of jobs and the impact that may have on a given community. There has been a great deal of conflict around race and gender in our country. As each person and group has their opinions, there are unintended consequences and disturbances that occur. The other common conflict is that around class. There are those that have many resources and those that do not. However, do we really know that those who have a lot of resources have less conflict or is there conflict different? These are some of the questions that can be interesting to consider in sociology and human behavior. The discussion she had was regarding macro and micro which can also apply to many discussion whether it be business, healthcare, economics or other influences. I think it is very helpful to think in this manner and first ask yourself the broader question before narrowing your thoughts and questions to a specific group. If you go to micro right away, you often miss groups in society that may be impacted.

  15. As always, I have to start with my opinion on the video. Super easy to follow, even when thrown words you don’t know. She takes her time in explaining what they mean, and how they apply to the topic. For instants, paradigms. Although I didn’t know what this term was, within seconds of hearing this word, an explanation was given. I like paradigms because they make people think. Like she said, people normally think in board terms, or “raw facts.” With a paradigm, you’re way more involved in that issue. Instead of saying, “That person is wealthy,” ask yourself, “Why is he wealthy, or how is it benefiting him?” You make assumptions, but you have to. This just makes you a well-informed person, on whatever it is you are talking about. Just make sure you are making the right assumptions. There’s no need to inform yourself on useless information. Just depends on your perspective. I strongly agree with the macro and the micro talk. Some topics are more macro, or broad, and some are micro or focused. Both need each other. Without macro questions, there isn’t any micro questions to be asked. Like for instance, I could say cancer is one of the leading causes of death. That is macro. If I said, lung cancer accounts for most of the cancerous deaths in the world, that's micro. We are making a broad statement into a more narrowed down approach. Briefly touching on the three main paradigms. Structural functionalism, which means people need to work together in order for society to function good. Conflict theory, which is basically saying different groups of people work towards a goal in society. Like money, or power. A good example, place in this video, is class-conflict. Which is just different economy classes, and how they get along with one another. Lastly, there is symbolic interactionism. Which is just the meaning we put behind actions we created. Like how shaking someone's hand is a sign of respect. Without us putting meaning behind these actions, there would be no symbolic interactionism. These paradigms are playing a huge role in our society. Maybe now you can begin to notice them!

    1. I agree with you that the video is very simple and she supports her arguments with examples which is very helpful. Sometimes I don’t understand the term or the concept by itself but when it used inside a real example that makes it very understandable. I did enjoy learning new paradigms and new stuff. It is very helpful to know how things really work and why they work the way they do. And also find it very interesting to learn about sociological paradigms and the functionalism theories because all of this defines society as a huge, complicated system in order to make stability in a society.

  16. Although I had heard the word paradigm many times throughout my life, I had a general assumption of what it was. I thought it to be a vague value of anything being discussed or learned about. I never put it into perspective, as I have never had to think about it directly into what I was doing or learning. Major Sociological Paradigms was quite interesting to learn about. And although it was called a “crash course”, you can, as they explain, interpret the information in your own way. Durkheim’s definition of Strucdtural Functionalism goes with the previous slide Wisdom of Sociology. He states that “society is seen as a complex system whose parts work together to promote stability and social order.” Or as it was said previously- empowerment by the interconnectivity, by this larger web of society. Focusing on the 3 different Sociological Perspectives and whether they are under macro or micro focus as well as having raw facts or interpretation is different in different parts of the world. A paradigm is a set of concepts and theories that frame your opinion and not one opinion is correct. There are groups of people that think alike and have the same opinions and others that think the total opposite. Factors such as race, gender, social and economic factors help shape these opinions or as we are more aware- paradigms. -TRM012

I think it will be interesting to put into perspective. I agree with all the terms you are using, and explaining. Thanks to the video, I have a way better understanding of these terms. The factors you listed is correct and I agree with the "not one opinion is correct" statement.

  17. I always enjoy learning about new paradigms. I like knowing how things work and why they work, and why things are the way they are. Sociological paradigms are interesting to learn about. The explanation of how people look at society and the paradigms of it was a very well worded crash course. Structural functionalism was an interesting theory. It defines society as a large and very complex system which functions in order to create stability and order. This theory was able to look at negative things, like poverty, as a positive function of society. This is debatable although it is a good point.

    1. Agreed! I love learning more about the fundamentals and reasoning behind why things are the way they are and such. Sociological paradigms are very interesting to learn about! I really liked all three approaches: the structural-functional approach, the social-conflict approach, and the symbolic-interaction approach. Society is so much more than what most people think. We are so much more similar than one may want to believe, and our interconnectedness is so unique and crucial. And yes, of course, it also provides stability and order. :) Every approach delves into different aspects of sociological on both a local and global scale. Great response! :)

  18. This is a very nice short lecture about theoretical paradigms, macro and micro distinction of sociology and the three different major paradigms. I found this video very helpful because this is my first time that I knew about paradigms and it opened my eyes on the world that shows there are a lot of things to learn not only inside classes but also when we are engaging outside with each other. I think the main problem that we as a society facing it that we don’t know anything about sociology as a science. When we hear about it we can easily relate it to our lives, but we don’t use sociology to help us get through life. I agree with her when she said that all scientific disciplines make assumptions about the world, and the scientific disciplines use different perspectives, depending on the questions they’re asking and of course the specific culture background that whether we like it or not, it affects on our perspective on things. What also caught my eyes when she talked about the manifest functions which are either intended or obvious consequences of a particular structure, while latent functions are unintended or unrecognized! This is something that we need to know more. Moreover, seeing the world from different lenses make it hard for the human being to determine what sociology is and how to answer the questions. This video is not about learning new words but more understand them from sociologist perspective point of view. We learn more by understanding the concept of sociology in our daily life and connect it to the way we live and being able to recognize us as one, not as groups who share different background and the interpretation analogy give the same credibility to sociology if we use it correctly. However, I have come to the conclusion through the videos we have been watching that, it is humans as a group/whole and not as one sharing different backgrounds, but are interconnected to come together. 19. This video was very informative and also interesting. Before I watched this video some of the words that were used you not in my vocabulary. Now that I have watched this video I have added the words to my vocabulary. When the lady in the video talked about the nature society and how there is not one answer. I agree with her statement. Each one of the models she said in the video are key elements to understand sociology and they all have their own perspective on the world. A word that I have not previously know was paradigms. With theoretical paradigms they help guide the research and the thinking from the sociologists to the the social world. Later on in the video when she talks about scientific disciplines and how they use different perspectives on each question they are asked. I think that it is good that they do that because you cannot just look at one perspective to determine everything. With how much macro and the micro are connected it can can give us a bigger picture with macros that are going on that are similar to the micro. I say this because of the example she used was about the way doctors talk with their patients from different races. It helps people look to the larger picture about racial dispeartie. A little while later in the video I like how she went into detail about the different theories. -jw012

  20. The video helped me take a look from a different point of view, helping me change my views for at least a little bit . I did not know about social paradigms prior to learning about this today. The manifest versus latent function is neat to think about with everything we encounter and what we do on a day to day basis. It helps you look at things from a different angle and then think about why its that way and what it is conditioning you to do. The conflict theory helps you view things as a whole and from a far. And then symbolic interactionism helps narrow that down to a smaller view and focus more in on the individual. The meaning we put behind things and why we do them is interesting to me. It justifies the the reasons we do these things. I find it very interesting to break things that are socially acceptable and unacceptable and break it down and find out why.

I agree that it is awesome to think about everything that we encounter and learn each day. I think that symbolic interactionism is interesting also. I did not know anything about these definitions for the paradigms and I am glad there are words to pinpoint what someone may be talking about and how society acts. I think that the conflict theory is very helpful because a lot of people are narrow minded and you need to be able to view things from different perspectives.

  21. This video was very interesting to watch and caught my eye on a few different topics. One thing that was brought to my attention was about what the nature of society is. She said that there was no answer and I completely agree with what she said about that. I learned about the word paradigm. I had heard the word used before but I never really understood what it meant. I just kind of went along with whoever was talking and acted as though I knew. Paradigm's are a model for how you think about things. They are fundamental assumptions for sociologists. She said raw facts do not interpret themselves meaning they are very simple descriptions. I learned that paradigms are not used only in sociology but in many other subjects as well. She talked about perspectives and how you have to use different ones and not base everything off of only one perspective which I think is very useful in life. Sociology looks at society from the macro to the micro. They are taking a broad focus when looking at the macro things such as how race effect the academic achievement. Looking at the micro is something that is smaller such as how do doctors talk to those of different races. Macro and micro are ties together and use each other. Structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism are the main theoretical paradigms. Symbolical interactionism is micro and conflict theory and structural functionalism are macro. All three of these theoretical paradigms help us to figure out what will happen next in life and in other things. I look at is as a key to cause and effect. We learn the consequences of our actions and the actions of the world. She went more into detail with these theories and they really helped me to start to understand this topic.

  22. I had to watch this video three times to catch all the information because of how quickly she breezed through, but in the end I definitely learned more about the different social approaches that we touched on in class. She went into enough depth that I can say confidently that I understand each of the approaches. Structural-functional is looking at all of society as a whole, a machine per se, so it is considered a macro point of view. She did mention that this view looks at certain things that we generally see as detrimental (poverty was the example she used) as something society needs to keep going; that we rely on it to keep the “machine oiled.” The social-conflict approach I almost missed because she transitioned right into it, and I thought she was saying conflict was part of structural-functional…but when I caught up I saw that it is a whole different approach concentrating on the different conflicts that we see in society: gender conflict, race conflict, and class conflict. There may be other conflict topics; she did mention the theory revolved around people fighting over things like land, money, status, etc. She only mentioned those three main ones though. To me that category is self-explanatory, people are always looking for something to fight about, I’m sure there are a plethora of conflict theories to go around. Lastly she talked about the symbolic-interaction approach which is micro focused, as it focuses on the product of every day social interactions. It is more about how people react to each other on a personal level every day as opposed to a larger scale like the other two approaches. Overall I liked the video, just glad it had subtitles and a pause button.

She explained what was “Paradigm”, and gave her explanation of the functions. I felt like the explanations she gave over the functions were great. She went into more detail one by one, as how to the bigger picture than the smallest function, but I think its so powerful how these functions work, and now perceive things more differently. I encourage more watch this, but will have to keep track of what she says though. - LILPUMP012

  23. Informative, thorough, and interesting, the lady in the video gave a quick run-down and summary of sociology and what it is and means. She reviewed the theories we covered in class, and helped define the difference between raw fact and meaning. I did find it interesting that we could define reality as she stated in the video, but when she explained it with the example of waving with her hand it made a lot more sense. This is something that may seem minor, but could be more impactful and effective than we think. Just simple social norms and/or cues, laws and rulings, etc. can make a huge difference in someone’s life just by how we define and agree on how to interpret it. This is huge! Of course, it would take a lot of people to make this decision, and it would take a bit to implement these changes. Again: difficult, but not impossible. Macro and micro are equivalent in importance; both have an effect on our society. I am really excited to learn more about sociology and to delve further into and explore the different sociological perspectives and theories that we learned about in the video and in class!

  25. What an overview of the video! Some of the things she explained went over in class I thought. Though, she did talk pretty fast. I have never ever heard the word “Paradigm”, but now I know what it means and it’s a model or in other terms, a pattern. I understand that sociology is like a paradigm, since everything is viewed differently and how everything is connected somehow, unexplained without words. This is because there is a pattern, and that pattern starts and ends with sociology. Sociology looks at the most deepest to the up most obvious of sociology. I thought personally the functions were very helpful, and now can perceive things a little bit more different. For example, were she brought how people fight over material is because there is a cause to it. Also, how we interact with other and showing our reactions to others. Next, she look at the bigger picture, as a whole, as a society looking at everything, how everything and its structure. I just think how sociology works its self from the bigger picture all the way to smallest, and just looks at everything. I find it very encouraging to learn more. This is more like a life-tip to help us better us, and look things in a different perspective. Also, like a challenge to us to do this and use it and see what kind of reactions we can get. Kind of like to see how society or the world act towards us, and how we react back. Sociology s teaching is these socio functions to see things in a much brad picture, and use our judgment with the reaction. I believe and defiantly encourage everyone to learn these 3 functions, because I find them very helpful, I thought. Like the video! Yes. - LILPUMP012

  26. Okay first what is a paradigm? I have never heard that world. The speaker says it's basically a model of how you think about things. She say these paradigms are the fundamental assumptions that sociologist have about the social world, the ones that guide their thinking and research. She says we need these assumptions because raw facts such as “tim is six feet tall” don't interpret themselves. Watching the video gave me a good description and i now know what paradigms are! I found this video very engaging. She does a good job explaining the three elements of paradigms which are structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. Her explaining the three different views on sociology was great. The three paradigms do not disagree but what they really do is complement each other. Anyone who watches this video or understand the different views of sociology would understand that the views allow a person to understand and view society in deep aspects. She then goes into explaining the three views of sociology more in depth. I took a liking on the speaker's explanation on the conflict theory. I found it intriguing that this view is about different groups that struggle over resources such as food, land, and power. This theory is a Macro theory which basically mean it talks about large topics and subjects. The speaker talks about the three conflict theories. The race conflict theory which focuses on social inequality as conflict between different racial and ethnic groups. Then the gender conflict theory which focuses on the social inequality between women and men. And last Class conflict, which focuses on imaging society as having different classes based on their means of production. This video was informational, like is said i had no idea was paradigm was. I learned a lot about the different perspectives on sociology. -cheese012

  27. This video is, like the channel name suggests, a crash course on the topic of sociological paradigms. There is a lot of information that is served in the short video, but I feel the way she explained everything worked out very well. First she explained that sociology is the scientific examination of the world we live in and can be examined from many different perspectives. She said that you may look at the same problem and depending on what questions you hope to answer get completely different solutions. She also explained that sociology is the exploration of problems both big and small, because know micro problems and maco problems makes it easier for us to draw conclusions about both sides of the story. Theoretical paradigm is the terminology used. What these tell us is a general outline of what society is like so that we may make conclusions about them, She spoke about Structural Functionalism. Which was originally thought up by Durkheim. What it tells us about society is that it is like an organism and we are the organs that make it run. If something goes wrong it was not intended and is, as the analogy would have it, an illness to society that can be cured. Along with this they describe about how certain institutions of our world have latent and manifest functions. As in a manifest function was intended by the creator and a latent function was simply a byproduct of the same institution, but with this comes dysfunction. Change in society is not promoted by this paradigm as it goes against the original thought process. Which is where conflict theory fills in the gaps. As conflict theory suggest that society needs to change and is natural in doing so.

  28. This video was confusing at first to understand but after watching it a few times I got the idea of what she was talking about. She broke down her talk into 3 main sections and the first section was about paradigms which is the way someone thinks and how something has based your reasoning on why you think that way. When watching the video I have never even heard of that word and never knew there was an word for reasoning on why and how we think about certain ideas. Structural functionalism was something that stood out to me because it was saying how society all together works together to keep order in the way we live our lives. In thinking that way it is true. In order for there to be a rich there must be a poor or else everything would be equal in society. In society there are things that are greater than other things and this is true with humans too even though we say everyone is created equal. What really caught my attention also was the symbolic interactions because we were talking about this class with how if you take your shoe off, that was a big no no in another country because we all have given a different meaning to different things based off how we see the world and how we’ve adapted in our society. Mrbubby012

  29. I like the idea of structural functionalism. When she mentioned it it gave me a better understanding of how society works. I like how it explains society as a whole and says that all the parts of society work together to keep stability. It is odd to think of how society works the way it does because of everyone's different status. The wealthy do their thing, the middle income do theirs, then the lower income do theirs. Everyone has different life styles and different types of jobs which makes it flow together and create a stable society. Everyone could not be on the same income level or job status or else their would be no balance. Society needs the wealthy CEO's along with the people who work for them in their chain of stores throughout the country. It is unfortunate to think some people are against helping the poor not be poor because of the way our society works. In my opinion it is true that everyone has their own role but I do not think having the poor not struggle as much would completely throw off the balance. If the poor kept their job status but maybe the minimum wage was raised the stability of society would remain but also help the hard workers who maybe did not have the same opportunities as the CEO's so to say.

  30. wow, my brain is a little fried after watching this one. She was given a very short time to have gone over all three of these perspectives. she did it well, after watching it a third time. learning about the way that sociology experiments work is going to be very interesting, given that there can be so many different possible outcomes. it amazes me that there are sociologist out there that one day decided they wanted to try to force society to do certain things to discover how they affect our daily lives and the way we do other things. while trying to discover one solution to a special issue or habit, the sociologist may discover something else that is making society do what they do. perhaps a sociologist think that a person is biting their nails everyday in their 1:15 class because it is a stressful class and it helps them concentrate and think better, but what they never tried to examine is if the person had eaten lunch yet or if they were hungry, and come to find out, the person bites there nails at 1:15 everyday in class because right after that class they go to lunch. there are simple things a sociologist can miss out on during an experiment but they somehow will always find the correct answer. one of my main questions after watching this video is this, "if sociologist can discover a method that tells them why we do what we do, do you think that there is potentially a way that sociologist can be guiding us through our daily lives by working with the government or the president. does steak and shake have 4 meals under 4 dollars because they know that we will come to them thinking its osme kind of deal but really it is not?" think about the things you see when going about ur daily life, notice the things that catch your attention, on purpose!

  31. In this video, we are first introduced to what a paradigm is. We are told that a paradigm is a model for how we think about things. We often need these paradigms to understand the raw facts for day to day life. She states that even though these can often seem one-sided and biased, that we need these to help examine ways in which society is or is not thriving in different areas. We are introduced to the idea of structural functionalism which basically means that society is a system of parts that work together to create stability. After being introduced to this, we then dig into what a conflict theory is. The general idea of a conflict theory is that there is a balance between two opposing forces, whether it be wealth levels, race, or sex. These deal with how the different levels of these interact and work with one another. The last idea we are introduced to is called symbolic interactionism, and although there are truths in each of these views, this is the one I relate to the most. We are told that this view can often times create a reality and gives meaning to the every day actions of our lives. In taking this view on life, it becomes much easier to understand why people react to certain things the way that they do. In understanding this micro approach, I believe that it would be much easier then to, in turn, understand the two other macro approaches. By understanding the underlying factors as to why people do the things they do, we can start to look at the groups as a whole. (Patriots012)

  32. The three main sociological paradigms are a model of the different perspectives to how we view our world. I understood fully what she meant by each perspective and it’s role in our society. I like the examples she used in the video to describe the two types of functions: manifest and latent, which ultimately are consequences that are really intended and commonly recognized. The Functionalist perspectives gives insight to emphasis on society by focusing on how each part play a significant role and is influenced by each other. While the symbolic perspectives focus on the big picture like she explained in the video. It also focuses on how human is influenced by definitions and meanings that are created from each other. The conflict perspective views different aspects of our society that the functionalist and symbolic don’t really look into. The conflict perspective views the social world by which groups have more power than the other and benefit from a social arrangement. Basically, it makes a division between the have and the have nots. This is important for us to know all of the perspectives for this reason, not to be fooled by any one telling us different. For us to not be divided intentionally. the video was nice, very informational but she talked too fast and I felt like every ten seconds I had to rewind the last 30 seconds which got annoying, so I eventually just slowed the speed down. Anyways, this video was a good analysis of the perspectives and how we contribute to them and our affected by them more than we know. Each perspective offered a variety of explanations about the social world and how human behavior is correlated. “By observing how others view us, we can see a reflection of ourselves” in what is the looking glass (Charles Cooley). -Jaci7429

  33. First off, I love Crash Course videos! Second, I love watching Crash Course videos for class.
But besides that, my actual comment is…
This video is a great example for showing how many different practices and conditions.
In her examples about macro v. micro, she clearly displayed the different levels of issues and how they are always connected. The example of racism in the medical field can also be compared to something as simple as how small churches interact with individuals vs. how the systems of religion treat outsiders. Another thing I liked was the good/bad view within Structural Functionalism. It really exemplifies the good within the issues and the bad within the “pros”. But the biggie here was Symbolic Interaction representing that many basic things were just created and agreed upon. No one will question a hand shake or a head nod because they are agreed upon greetings, but do we ever stop to think on the originations of such small and simple things?

  34. This was a very interesting video. I learned a lot about sociology in a quick video. Sociology deals with everything in life both the big things and the little things. That is kind of cool to me. When I think of sociology I do not think of it like that I look at as just a basic thing. Sociology deals with the macro and micro ideas of life. We don’t realize things like race affecting the workplace or educational setting and something as small as personal idea are both sociology. I heard of Karl Marx, but I did not know he made up the class-conflict theory. In fact, all the theories were cool to learn about since I had not heard about them before. Durkheim really caught my eye because he spoke out about malfunction and deviation. I look at the society we live in today and apply it to his theory. A lot of things going on in this day and time is just dysfunctional. For example, the president we have today has caused a lot of angry people and a dysfunctional country. This is a macro issue because this is going on outside of a personal issue, this is a national issue. I find that being the cool about sociology because everything going on in the world has something to do with sociology. Another example, all of the conflict with police officers killing African American men has become a macro issue around the country. It may look to other countries as if we are just malfunctioning country because of these issues. That is why Durkheim’s theory stuck out the most to me because it can be applied to everyday life. It is sad but cool at same time how a sociologist from a years ago has a theory that goes perfect with the world we live in today.
