Why Study Sociology in the First Place?

  1. I enjoyed this video. I like how she explained what sociology is all about and how it has evolved over time. I wasn’t entirely sure what sociology was all about but from watching this video I’ve learned that it’s all around us and really a part of every day life. I agree with her on why sociology should be taught to everyone because honestly everyone could use it. It’s interesting how sociology has gone from connections with a career like social work to connections with literally any career. The fact that the students this woman had were mostly from London but were sent to London to do a sociology project was cool because it made them see the city in a totally different way. I’m sure I will also relate to this when it comes to Peoria when I get to learn more about sociology. Since I have lived here for all my life I see it in a certain way but maybe this class will open my eyes to a new way I can view my hometown. Sociology is all about questioning things and why or how its happening. This is relatable for everyone because no one ever lives with out a question. For example, I am sure that there is plenty I don’t know about Peoria and plenty of people I don’t know. So, this leaves me to question what do I know about Peoria and how much I actually do not know about. I figure the not knowing wins because there is no way to know everything and there are more questions in the world than answers for sure. In all I thought this video was a helpful introduction into sociology. It is amazing how one subject can give someone so much passion to question the world around them. I understand why this is so important now.

    1. I agree with all that you had to say about the video and how it was helpful. I mainly like how you said that everyone asks questions because it is very true in life I believe you succeed more if you ask questions. It helps clarify the unknown. Its helps you improve in many ways and its something everyone should do more often. By this I mean question with a bigger thought in mind. Challenge yourself to think more depth into certain topics.

    2. I can completely relate to your sentiment about hopefully being able to view your environment in a new (and hopefully refreshing) way after studying Sociology. Coming from a nearby town that has a very distinct culture to it, I am hoping that my experiences in this course and the rest of college will help me in developing a new point of view when it comes to my immediate and global surroundings!

    3. I agree with you a lot on how it had to be pretty cool to have a project that is in your own city. I myself am also from Peoria, and can see how sociology can be applied into my life. Instead of communicating through my normal social circle sociology breaks the boundaries, I may learn something about a city that I lived in and all new things can arise by simply asking a question. I always thought I knew everything that was here in the city, but through asking someone outside who I never met or would have never approached could be something new that can be learned and get a new look at my city getting information from someone new, meaning if I were to just ask my social circle something I would always be in my normal way of thinking, but asking a stranger could open my eyes to new things that I never knew were here in the city. just me 012

    5. I agree with all what you said about sociology is really around us and it is part of our everyday life. I believe that by understanding what exactly sociology is, and anyone can absolutely be able to define and analyze the important matters in life, community, and in the whole world. At most, I agree with you in sociology should be teaching to everyone and be part of the entire careers. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! POINTOFVIEW012

    6. I agree with you in the sense that I enjoyed how she explained very well that sociology is all around us and part of our everyday lives.  I also really like the fact that you mentioned the field has turned from just a narrow career path to something in social work to virtually an career, especially dealing with people.

  2. My conjecture is the video was very potent in a simple way. The reason being she mentions how sociology is not just one thing, that it’s not just a word it’s bigger than that. It has developed gradually meaning it use to be considered only being a part of social work but now in present day it occurs in many places in different ways. As it should because it deals with people, race, relationships, politics and more. What these things have in common is the fact that at some point everyone is evolved with these things weather its debating your thoughts with another person about who should be president or seeing the diversity in a television show your friend is watching. In the video she mentions how the people who are most suited for sociology, question the world around them. She then goes on to state that sociology is about asking why something is happening or how did it happen. I think that everyone uses sociology daily without knowing, because it is very natural to ask question therefore it’s how communication works. I also, believe that once you are aware of things such as what sociology is you think differently and question things more including having a deeper understanding of the world around you and what’s going on in it. This video was very helpful in a way of opening my mind to a wider knowledge of life. I say this because I knew that sociology is a part of my life personally though I didn’t know I use it and I’m around it throughout my day. Something that I learned was that sociology didn’t use to be used in ever line of work is was limited. As my year goes on I will be questioning the world around me because as an adult I should be aware of what is going on, why it’s happening, and who is it happening to.

    1. I agree, IDK123! Sociology is such a big part of everyone's everyday life, and most of the time we don't even realize or recognize it. Everyone has personal opinions about a group of people they came across or a person they met, or even have questions arise when seeing someone of a different ethnic or racial background than they do. It's completely normal! And it's very interesting as well. :) I personally find anthropology/sociology to be a very intriguing area of study, and have always admired and loved learning about those different than me regarding cultures, religion/beliefs, backgrounds, etc. And yes, sociology has /so many/ different components, but all SO so important. Awesome thoughts! :)

  3. I found everything she said in the video factual. The part the stuck out the most to me is when she mentioned Sociology as being a passion these days. I couldn't agree more because I feel like this subject is something you have to be interested in, in order to engage in it and actually pass it. Me, myself, I am going to school for social work so again when she mentioned it being a passion I couldn't agree more. I also agreed with her when she said Sociology can fit into any job. The things that will be taught in Sociology I believe will give one a better understanding about life not just theirs but other peoples as well which is good because you have a better understanding of the people you have to surround yourself with everyday. Another thing she mentioned was how the instructors integrate their own learning into their teachings I found that very cool because sometimes teaching your own personal knowledge to others can be the greatest lesson of all. It reminds me of how my instructor has his students sit in the classroom, we're all close together because he feels when students are closer together we're more engaged in learning and getting work done which is VERY smart when you think about it and true! Overall I liked the video and I actually did learn things that I will remember throughout the semester in this class.

    1. I agree with what you're saying about how sociology is something you have to be passionate about in order to be successful in. Especially since you're going into social work as a career, I think you would have an advantage of knowing what sociology is. And you're right about our instructor incorporating sociology into our classroom. I think moving everybody close together is smart and interesting, it gives everyone the best chance at working together and succeeding in the class.

  4. This video did a nice job summarizing Sociology for anyone who was unclear about its practicality and application. As a science, Sociology has a very wide variety of uses, for example an obvious choice: Social Work. However, Sociology, like other science disciplines, can be applied in countless occupations and settings. Another example would be in the criminal justice system. One thing that comes to mind when I think of Sociology and its applications is the show Criminal Minds (of which I have rapidly become a binge watcher). The FBI agents use a combination of Psychology, Sociology, and Statistics to solve cases involving mentally disturbed people. Sociology is not only used to help the criminal or impoverished, however. Like the speaker in the video said, Sociology involves questioning how and why things happen around us, and that involves a very powerful application. In fact, every company or corporation probably has employees on staff that have degrees in or background in Sociology, possibly working in HR or Customer Relations. I really connected with the video after the speaker mentioned her students viewing the world in a "completely different lens" after studying Sociology and applying it to the real world, as I felt the exact same way after completing a Psychology course and was better able to understand not only my, but other's actions and behavior better, helping me become more "woke", per say.
I love working with and helping people, which is one reason why I signed up for this class, and also why I appreciate the speaker mentioning the passion involved in the field of Sociology. For the most part, I would imagine social work or criminal justice jobs to be fairly thankless, yet many people make very successful careers out of them. This is why I think studying Sociology helps people figure out what kind of person they are. After all, learning all about how and why we and our fellow citizens behave and interact is very profound.

  5. This video is really spot on. I agree with a lot of what she had to say. For example when she said that you can relate sociology with anything nowadays is very true. I think that since we can relate almost anything with sociology make it more interesting to study. I also believe everyone should have some sort of education and knowledge of what sociology is all around, even if it doesn't interest you. As for myself I also do have a lot of questions and hopefully taking this class can help me get a feel of how and why things are the way they are today. She made good point when she said that sociology can also be good for job opportunities because in those situations you are working with many different types of people. That can help you get a idea of how sociology can be applied in the work environment. We can take our knowledge of the world around us and what we already know and apply it to sociology which I think makes it more interesting and develops more questions. Sociology can relate to everything and anything around us and it would be such a amazing opportunity to be able to travel and study different types of communities. In high school I did take a sociology class as well and this video does explain some things that we never really got to or got in depth with. Sociology goes way back and is still developing today which is really cool that we can see and study the progression over the years. Case studies and learning about things like religion, politics, housing communities, and even marital statuses. For example polygyny. Im really excited to see what more I can learn from this class and how I can apply this video to what I learn.

  6. The way she describes sociology to me was very straightforward. Sociology isn’t just one thing. There is more to it than just receiving a sociology degree and working strictly in a social-work department. She mentions that there are people in all different fields that rely on sociology every day in order to perform their jobs efficiently. Careers including criminal justice, and more. She makes it clear to me that sociology is in even just ordinary people’s mundane lives. If we step outside and are placed into a social interaction at all, we’re dealing with sociology. She also states that after teaching students what sociology is, and what it looks like in the community, they all had a better understanding of what sociology was, and how to spot it and appropriately react to it in real life. The “sociological lens” as she called it. I think it is important for students from all over, not just London, which of course would include myself and my classmates, to develop a “sociological lens” as well. I would love to gain insight on understanding why someone, a student, would choose to pursue a career revolving around sociology as opposed to a business degree or a communications degree or even a science degree! But from what I listened to and gathered here today, it seems to all be tied in together. You can’t really know business if you don’t know people, you can’t communicate if there’s no one to communicate with, and you can’t really master science if there aren’t people in the world to study and research. Which, to me, seems like sociology is more important than many of us realize. It seems as though sociology is almost just the study of life, and how people coexist with one another. It’s made up of all factors, and there’s a lot to understand about it because it isn’t just one thing. I look forward to increasing my knowledge on the subject of sociology.

    1. I really like what you said about sociology being of much more importance than we realize. When I really think about it though, sociology is one of the most important things one can study. If we do not know how to communicate well, how will we be doing our jobs or living life to our full potential. Everyday life could not be lived without communicating with others. Whether that be working alongside someone or it may just be someone you run into at the grocery store. Without communication humans could not survive. I definitely agree with all of the points that you brought up. (Patriots012)

  7. In Dr Sarah Malby video about why sociology is important I learned that it is about asking questions, like why is this happening or what is happening. She mentioned that sociology is an orientation of life and knowledge. It is run through communication networks and can be applied to any job or career and degrees that provide employment. Sociology offers an outlook that can give you a new way to see the world we live in through sociology. At one point she mentioned it was just applied with social work, but now it can fit into all jobs. Capitalism and migration in this globalized world is all run through soc, race, politics, and relationships are all related to this also. I would have never known just asking a question was a part of soc. You can learn something new every day just by asking questions; however you can never really know it all. Asking the question why or what is happening; I would have never thought that it would be applied to sociology. It seems to break the boundaries for diversity also, meaning that no matter the gender or race everyone can get information that they might not know by simply just asking questions. It also gives me a new look on what soc will be about because I myself never knew it touched so many different things. Without it I believe that the world would be one sided, and can see how it can help people to break away from looking at each other differently and to look at each other as knowledge meaning if there is something that a person is uncertain of they shouldn’t let race or gender get in the way of asking someone something that they are unsure of. The video lets you see how you can apply it with just about everything you do in life. Everyone can always learn new things in the world and about it by asking questions not just from people in your social circle but from stranger who you may come across in the world. Like the saying goes one can never judge a book by its cover, because if so you could be missing out on information that you never knew about. Just me 012

  8. In the video, the professor gave a very good and clear description of what sociology is. She explains that it used to be less vocational as a study, but now it can be applied to many different fields. Sociology is all around us, and we experience it every day. I found it interesting when she talked about the different types of study that her school offered. Obviously sociology is a very wide field of study, and the variety of programs offered by her school are beneficial in narrowing the study. The program where students go and live in London and observe sociological processes seems very interesting, especially since many of the students already lived in London. This would give them the opportunity to see their hometown from various different perspectives and lifestyles. I think this would be interesting to do in my own hometown, in order to see how people live that I don’t know about. I feel like I know a lot about society as I see it and how it operates. Hopefully this course will make me think of things I have never thought about and see things from angles which I had never seen before.

    1. The part where you mentioned trying this in our hometown stood out to me. I feel like that's a really good idea because it'll give everybody a better understanding about other people's life. This would be beneficial whether you're you're a college student or not. This solution would also I believe form more friendships as well as a different outlook on society. Matter of fact this experiment would be good for the whole country! I think by doing it, it'll create world peace! Less racism if you think about it. The flaw in racism is the fact people don't take the time to learn other races backgrounds, you know, so when they see oh that person isn't like me it becomes a problem. When there's a easy solution that can solve all that. You're suggestion was VERY smart!

    2. This reply really got my wheels turning so THANK YOU FOR THAT! The original reply was VERY mind boggling for me as well. I would love to participate in this type of experiment, I think it would be interesting to see what kind of results we all would come up with and even more interesting to see how we, ourselves change how we act individually. It makes me wonder if viewing the world through a sociological lens will actually change how we interact with others. My best hypothesis would say that how we act would allow us to change for the better, but I guess we’ll actually have to do it to be sure! I found it interesting how you mentioned that doing this could potentially bring about world peace. IF people had the curiosity and wanted to know more than I would agree with you 100%! In the video, she stated that sociology is best suited for those who have questions about the world that they live in. So, I say once people WANT to know, there could be a very good opportunity for more unity all around the world.

  9. I have already taken sociology in high school and I must admit that I didn’t have a very accurate understanding of the purpose of the class like I thought I did. The video gave a very clear description of what exactly sociology is and how it can be used in the world. Initially, I was under the impression that sociology was something that was limited in job opportunities and irrelevant in day to day application outside of social work. However when I watched this video, I feel she made me understand that sociology itself can be used to enhance the work done in many, if not all professions. After she made this claim, I began to think about how I could possibly use it in my choice of study. “How in the world would sociology help me as a respiratory therapist?”. I thought about it for a few minutes and came to the conclusion that learning about human development, structure, and functioning could enhance my relationships in which I will have with patients once I am actively working in my career. Not only did she say that sociology is good to understand for the workfield but also when trying to understand current events that happen all over the world. You never know what’s going to happen, especially in the type of world we live in, but I think it’d be pretty cool to at least know why something may have happened by applying sociological thinking. I found it very interesting that most of her students were from London and were sent to London to view it from a sociological perspective. I hope that once we dive in to content in class that I too, will be see the my world from a different view and be able to apply what I know in my day to day life. Overall, I believe that this video gave a very clear and simple introduction to the study of sociology and really brought about the importance of the field of sociology as a whole.

Hopefully I can find the sociological applications in my future career and make strong connections with people.

  10. When I initially approached the topic of sociology, I was not exactly sure what to expect. I knew that it was roughly related to how people relate to each other and to the culture, but I was not sure of specifics. One of the things she mentions here really shines a light on the nature of sociology, and that is the statement regarding how sociology is more of an orientation to life than it is an orientation to specific knowledge. It may sound like a simple thing to say, but it is very enlightening. Sociology is not about being told “Here is how people are and here is how culture is.” and calling it a day. Instead, it is a lens by which we can view many of the various activities and interactions in day-to-day life. Like Dr. Maltby said, it does not just remain compartmentalized in it’s own box of study, but completely saturates our lives. Issues addressed within sociology are beneficial for everyone to be aware of, to discuss, and to think deeply about. If we do not discuss issues, then nothing will ever change and we will not be compassionate towards each other. That is why sociology is so important. When Dr. Maltby talks about practical sociology or “doing sociology,” to put it in her words, that is something that I hadn’t imagined. I always assumed that sociology was more of a discussion based study, but, if I think about it, practical sociology makes sense. What better way is there to understand how people, culture etc. relate to one another than to directly observe them in action? I am looking forward to learning more about not only sociology as a study, but also sociology as a practice. I think it will be interesting to compare the study of sociology alongside psychology, economics, and other subjects that involve culture and human activity.

  11. The video done by Dr. Sarah Malby did a nice job of summarizing what sociology is and bringing people that might not know a whole lot about sociology up to speed. I found it interesting that sociology can be applied to many parts of everyday life. People in all kinds of jobs are dealing with sociology everyday they go to work. I liked how she said sociology is a orientation of life and knowledge I like how she described using sociology as a lens to see the world in a different view or perspective. Not only does social works use sociology, but also race, politics, and relationships do as well. I like how she said that in sociology you need to be asking questions like why is it happening or what is happening. By doing this you are learning something possibly new when you just ask something. I find that once you know about sociology and how it works, you will start to see the world in different ways. I found it interesting that her students from London were studying their own city and studying it from different perspectives. The video gave me a new perspective on what sociology is about because I have not taken a sociology class before. I like how Professor White has used sociology in his own class. By having everyone sit together with no empty seats is a great way to keep us engaged. It even forces us to get to know the people around us and ask questions about them. I think if we were all spread out some of us may struggle more than others due to the fact we wouldn’t be sitting close to another person. With this knowledge I have learned just from this video, I will look at the world in a different perspective.

  12. I’m glad she immediately introduced us to the fact that sociology is vital in almost every aspect of life today. Not only do most careers require you to frequently engage with other people, but in the last few decades technology has opened so many things to us. You can converse with people from almost anywhere in the world, which opens up so much in the way of learning about other cultures and ways of life that are different than our own, in other countries and even our own. I think the first sentence of this video really makes you understand why sociology is such a vital subject to be familiar with: “Sociology is less an orientation to knowledge, than an orientation to life.” Her opening really makes you see that this isn’t just another subject you have to get out of the way to move forward with your degree, you’re not in this class to cram too much information into your short term memory just to pass a test and then never use that information again…this is a class where the subject material will relate to our everyday lives for the rest of our lives regardless where we take them. It's hard to lose interest in a class that can be about anything currently happening in your life.

  13. Sociology, as the woman pointed out, plays such a vital role in our everyday lives. It’s what shows us who we are as one cohesive people. Sociology teaches us how to not only interact with those different than us, but how to appreciate and live amongst them as well. You could find a man in the snow coated forests of Siberia, or a woman from the damp forests of Singapore. Or possibly a teenage boy paroling the streets of New York City, or little girl flying a kite with her father in Australia. I love how our world is so, so diverse, but every single human being is *exactly* the same. We’re all people. We all have families. Children. Husbands. Wives. A career. A place to call home. You name it. And yes, though all of these things vary in how they look or how they’re gone about eventually getting, they’re all the same. My personal favorite bit that she mentioned during the video was when she had her students go about London, but with different lens. This is so, so important. Just understanding the world that you live in and how special and unique it is in its diversity and image can help you better appreciate the place you call home. Remember how overjoyed you got in the first grade when your once cup of soil and seeds seemingly magically turned into a sprout, and in time, a flower? You loved that flower more than anything. Why? Because you invested in it. You had a direct relationship with it. That’s what Sociology is. The more you’re able to understand and relate to the “seeds” of your city, your state, your country, your culture etc., the more you’ll be able to reminisce in and appreciate the colorful world that you’re a part of. Now that you’ve delved into the rich depth of the roots and what makes those things unique to you, you now have the privilege to cherish the wonders within when its flowers are in bloom. That’s what Sociology is all about! :)

    3. I really enjoyed your perspective about Sociology because I too believe that the subject is one of the most applicable to life. As individuals we are truly invested in being human. Sometimes being human means that we want to be unique, but although we are individuals we are not that different from the billions of other people across the globe, and sometimes we strive to fit in. I too find it so interesting that we all strive to be unique and stand out, yet want to fit in with the vast diversity of the strong, amazing people that we are. And if you think about it, it actually isn't that hard to find a place to belong since we are all much more similar than you think :) I think that cultural/social norms or what people say to be really gets in the way of that, which is unfortunate. Thanks for your reply!

  14. The role of a Sociologist seems analogous to that of a scientist. As Dr. Sarah Maltby describes, the people that are best suited to study Sociology are those people who are naturally inquisitive. Like scientists, Sociologists have questions about the world they live in, and they work to answer and understand any and all possible explanations to those questions. Today, there are many possible fields to go into if a person majors in sociology, but I believe this time in history is an extraordinary time to study Sociology because as Dr. Maltby mentioned “we live in a rapidly changing world,” that is very interconnected through globalization. Whereas the study of Sociology traditional seemed to focus on a single society at once or compared distant societies with another, today, different societies interact immensely. This overlap between societies adds as “new” level of complexity to the field and creates a greater challenge to understand the roles of individual coexisting societies, that have the ability to work together and corporate as one. As time progresses, our world is becoming more and more connected. Things that occur on one side of the globe, in one society, not only greatly affect neighboring societies, but also societies halfway around the globe. Because societies are becoming more and more connected, Sociology is becoming more and more important. I thought it was interesting that students at City University in London actively carry out Sociology in their hometown. I feel that studying Sociology in a place that is familiar makes the realizations much more meaningful in the end. In addition, I believe being in a familiar place would make it easier to focus on the study at hand because a new environment would add an extra distraction. I hope that with each day of this class I am able to see my hometown through a slightly different lens. All in all, this video taught me that even though there are special people who become Sociologists, all people are part of a society and each person deserves to question and learn about what dictates their daily lives. I always have the confusion about what is exactly sociology and how it affects my life without seeing it or even think about it. I am coming from far away from where people over there don’t care about sociology and never teach it unless one is interested in knowing about it. I don’t know exactly if sociology in the US is the same in other places. I believe that it would be quite the same but have some differences depending on the cultures and the circumstances. Also, I totally agree with what Dr. Sarah Malby when she said that Sociology should be taught to everyone because sociology it isn’t just a subject that one needs to memorize and being able to answer any direct question, but it is more than that, it is about the important matters in one’s live, and how one understand it and connect it to any career in this world. I always wanted to know more about sociology as a felid not as a career because I believe it will help me get through many things in my life. I am very excited that I am taking this with an amazing instructor like Professor White. My main goal is not just to pass this class with a good grade, but also to improve my knowledge and being able to understand what sociology is and why one should take this class. Since I am not from here this is a chance of being exposed to this new culture and be able to understand people live that I don’t know anything about. POINTOFVIEW012

    1. I do agree with what you are saying. Even though the video is only three minutes long, there is a lot of information that is being said for us to understand in those three minutes. Anyone who doesn't or hasn't heard anything about sociology should watch this video to get an idea about what it is all about. i also agree that it should be taught to everyone in any career field because they might not even know it but they are using sociology. if they take the course they will have a better understanding of what sociology means and what is it about.

  16. I enjoyed watching this video, I think she explained sociology very well. I agree with here in the aspect that everyone should take a sociology class, because sociology has to do with everyday life. She also talks about how sociology can pretty much be applied to every career, rather than just sociology related careers, which I thought was interesting. Sociology is very important now a days, especially when the world has become globalized. You can literally talk to someone from across the world in a matter of minutes. I am really looking forward to learning more about sociology in this class. JE012

  17. I really did enjoy this video and how she explained what sociology is and how it has changed over time. When I first signed up for the class, I had no idea what sociology was when I first started the class. Her explaining it really helped me get a better understanding about this specific subject. She gave us examples of what kind of questions that should be asked about the world that we live in. It was interesting for me to hear that sociology went from only being taught for careers like social work to now just about any career that you can think of. I am hoping that after hearing more about sociology I am able to see things differently where I live compared to how I see things now in Peoria. I know for a fact that no one know every single thing there is to know about the city. Everyone sees differently and have different opinions about a lot of things about the city. I am really excited to see what this class has to offer for me and everyone else. I want to see what all of my classmates think about sociology and what they already knew before watching this video. I do agree with her when she said that we live in a rapidly changing world. The world changes every single day and some of us question why did it change and is it changing for the good or the bad. Sociology has a part in just about anything you can think of like people, races, religion, politics, and the list keeps getting longer. I truly am really excited to see what sociology has in store for me. I believe that sociology is going to come in really handy in my career as a police officer.

Your are right that everyone is different in their own ways, thinks differently, and generally were all different from each other. Yes, the world does change everyday. Literally, anything can change in a snap of a finger to be exact. I as well look forward to hear everyones views on various topics. I also agree that sociology takes a huge role in law enforcement, and look forward to learn everyone’s views in class! - LILPUMP012

  18. I can’t tell if I enjoyed her accent or the video more; regardless, I think sociology is going to be really cool! It’s not just one big thing like boring old math or earth science; sociology has way more depth and plays a part in our everyday lives whether we even recognize it or not. In this particular video Dr. Maltby explains that sociology is all about asking questions like “why is this happening” and “what is it that’s happening”; the ones who have a passion for asking questions and wanting to understand those questions to gain a deeper meaning of the world thrive in the sociology field. But she explains it hasn’t always been this way; if you studied sociology it used to mean you could possibly become a social worker, whereas now you can apply sociology to any job you might be interested in. Like Criminal Justice! At the end of this video she talks about how her department goes around London and literally does sociology; putting a whole new sociological twist on the city, even for those who spend every day of their lives there, can change their entire perspective of the city for them. This really made me think about how interesting it would be to “do sociology” in Morton and Peoria. Who knows, it might even make the towns more interesting. I’ve always loved gaining new perspectives on other people’s opinions and just learning new things about them in general. It’s an amazing thing to be able to understand others through evaluations and communication; in the world we live in today and how much things have evolved over time sociology is especially useful and I can’t wait to learn more in this semester’s class.

    1. The accent was pretty great, and I really enjoy your optimism for the class whether real or not. It is always been pretty interesting to see how deep and complex the themes of sociology can become, but, like you said, always link back to more simple questions of why we do the things that we do. I mean the lady said she specialized in the media war on terror which sounds pretty specific to me, but connects back to the central questions as well.

  19. Having taken a sociology course before in my life while still in high school I already have at least a layman understanding of what material and subject matter will be brought up during the course of this semester. I did however find this video to be an interesting tidbit about sociology as a whole. She never becomes terribly specific about any details of what is done she mostly speaks in terms of the application of learning sociology as a whole, and on that point I agree with her in the video. She says that sociology is something everyone could do, because it is the study of people as a whole and you do belong within the "whole". She also says that sociology is a very job-friendly field to work in as well as a field that someone can have true passion for. It is something that is layered in its complexity yet familiar at its base. I know that the exploration of sociology is more an exploration of yourself than one might realize. During a high school class I had to do a social norm project. Where I picked one thing that is natural to all people (drinking, eating, sitting, riding elevators, clothing) and found a way to twist the norm and then document peoples reaction to your simple change. In most cases you would do something like enter an elevator, but when the doors close do not face the exit face toward the back of the elevator. Nothing immediately jumps out as wrong, but you will almost always notice a feeling of discomfort from the other people in the elevator. This video if anything has helped me begin to search my mind for the material I have already learned and then prepare myself for what new things I will learn over this semester. twentyfourframes012

  20. This videos introduce so much in such short time. its a great introduction of understanding the real meaning of sociology and the impacts it can have. the video make me question myself about the real meaning behind sociology. Sociology is a very good learning indicator to help people understand the concept of different cultural, races, thoughts, and actions. As explained sociology can help understand ourselves better, it also help with the way we feel, think, and act. as humans we don't actual think about how much sociology has an impact on us. after watching the video Dr Sarah Maltby made me think to myself about sociology and what correlation do/will sociology impact on my own well-being.MonsterHigh012

  21. With watching this video I found it very interesting. I also personally like the video. I agree with her when she says that there is a passion with sociology among the people who study it. I say this because of the people who ask questions about why things happen in the world, what exactly is happen out in the world, and the people even wanting to know how everything relates to each other. I believe that sociology can be a huge part in anyone's career. Especially now in this day in age with everything happening in the world and with how many job opportunities that are out there. If a person wanted to get a job with a sociology degree that person has many options because of how much sociology is used. I also like how just in three minutes Dr. Sarah Maltby explained sociology and some things about it in just a short amount of time. I also found it very informative. With those who have not figured out what they want to major in and they go with a sociology degree it offers many jobs as I have stated before. I like how she stated how much sociology has changed over the years and how what is going on in the world today is impacting the outlook of how people interpret it through the sociology perspective. I found it interesting how at the school Dr. Sarah teaches at they incorporate the research that has been discovered in to the way that they teach their students.

  22. I'm glad that I watched this video because I was really ignorant to what sociology actually  is and it's importance to society. I have always assumed that sociology is a subject that people take that are going into social work. This five minute video has help me realize that sociology is a part of every day life, and it is essential to gaining professionally. I am going into nursing which sociology is very relevant in the healthcare industry, seeing that I will have to interact and connect with all kinds of people and families. So knowing how to socialize is very important in that aspect. I also have two children of my own that I have unknowingly been teaching sociology. I am teaching them how to be respectful of others and how to behave in different situations that they are faced with in society. And domestically.  From my understanding of this video, sociology and communication are almost hand in hand. In this video she spoke on how sociology has evolved over time and that sociology is a form of discipline. She also explained how it is an orientation to life. Meaning that it is not one specific thing or directed to a specific area like social work, but it is very broad. This video has allowed me to become instantly aware of how vital sociology actually is. I initially enrolled in sociology because it is a required class in my program's course list. But I am now looking forward to the rest of the semester and open to what the class has to offer. -Inspire012

  23. This is my first time taking a class like sociology. I had no idea what sociology was. Some of my friends took this course last semester and they informed me that it is a very interesting class and that i would enjoy it. So im looking forward to taking the class. I do enjoy learning this about our world and the society we live in. Im very excited to hear that this class won't be boring like any other class such as history or government. Im hoping we can go into great detail about some interesting topics. I love having debates and hearing other people's views and perspective on certain topics. I am very open minded about a lot of things, so i think this class will be great for me. My goal for this class is to improve my knowledge about all the subjects we talk about. In this video Dr. Sarah is very general about what type of jobs you can get with studying sociology. But she does a great job in explaining what sociology is over all. I agree that everyone should take a sociology class, because like she said it deals with everyday life. Dr. Sarah mentions that most jobs you wouldn't even think of deal with sociology. i found that interesting, I didn't know that. I also found it interesting how her students study sociology in london, and they are studying it from different perspectives. I hope that when i'm done with this course this semester i will be viewing the world differently and be able to apply the knowledge i was taught into my everyday life. I also am hoping that i can make sense of a lot more things and i'm hoping this course will make me think of certain things more in debt.

  24. I like the way she summarized sociology in this video, I like that she turned the attention to from knowledge to rather an understanding to of the world we live in and and the happenings around us. I understand it as a way to open your views up to rather just what you see in front of you but to see what is going on around you and what is taking place every where in the world. I always thought sociology as being more of a stepping stone to another career like the described in the beginning like towards social work or to just get a better understanding of social constructs to help you in whatever you do, rather than a career of itself. I like that it can be a career and I find that to make it more interesting. Also she says you need a passion to pursue a career in this field but I find to do well wouldn’t you need a passion in whatever you do? Isn’t that why most people do what they do because they have a passion for it? Or I may be by myself here but that is usually my main motivation. I also found it interesting how she said there are things in our world we can only understand further through the eyes and study of sociology, by breaking it down through sociology. I enjoy the idea of putting sociology into everything we do to understand it further, to break down the social norms and to really get to the root of the meaning of something we do. I like to know where everything comes from and why we do it. I find that really interesting to find out why we do the things we do. I would really enjoy learning about the sociology behind the news and social media and they way its driven I would find that very interesting. I think the news has turned into everything but being news worthy, and I would like to break it down and find out why that is, or even why I think that. I would like to learn and get to know the reasons behind the social media addiction we all have and why it has become such a powerful monster looming over us controlling everything we do. We do things based upon how many likes it will get when we post it or how much attention we will get. I find it strange and has made people become even more disconnected to one another in real life than before. We may be connected at all times through the internet and social media but the connected face to face is just not there anymore. I’m really looking forward to just exploring the reasons behind most social norms in our world why we do somethings and why we don't do others

  25. I have never taken sociology before and didn’t really know what I was getting into when I signed up for the class. However, the way she explained what it is all about really intrigued me. She stated that it is all about asking questions on everything. I for one never liked asking questions I just went with the flow. but now I understand that asking questions is pretty much the basis of it. You need to ask questions and need to dig deep to get a clear understanding of what is happing and why it is like that. It is interesting to me how she explains how its not just one ideal, but more so a huge part of everyday life that many of us are blind to. This part really stood out to me the most because she said students had an opportunity to go to London and view London in a sociologic way, that most of the students were from London and they could see it through a new lens. This showed me how many if not most of us are oblivious to the sociologic outlook in our culture. Makes me think how we could see our culture in different ways.

  28. Awesome video! I definitely liked how she explained the meaning behind sociology and made it a clear understanding. Now, I know a little bit more about sociology and look forward to learn more. The way she explained how we could use sociology in our everyday life is very powerful, and I don't think a lot of people notice that. I took a sociology course in high school, and have a somewhat of an understanding about it. This is way beyond how we view the world, why people do certain things, and why are things the way they are. Seeing how much the world has evolved is going to be interesting. Not just humans, but anything and everything. Yes, I hope in the end of the course I can apply everything that I will learn to my best of my knowledge and skills to help me improve myself, help others, and learn more about the world. She also mentioned that a part of sociology shapes a part of various careers. I just think that is so amazing! I myself want to be a law enforcement officer or FBI agent, and can definitely see a lot of sociology being involved in criminal justice. Just learning more about other religions, other countries, ethnicities, foods, families, friends, and just everything is going to be so exciting. Also, society and technology is always moving forward and curious how much more the world will shape up to be in the near future. Just watching the correlation of past, present, and future is interesting. I do encourage others to take this course because I am sure ill be worth the bucks. Dr. Sara Maltby says sociology is about “asking questions and a orientation to life”. Also, she mentions this more like a passion to the world, and I agree with everything she said. Understanding why or how people do the things they do will broaden our knowledge and culture. To be cultured and open minded in the real world the first thing you need is an understanding of everyone and the world around you. Not just YOUR society and YOUR culture but everyone elses. Throughout life you will run into tons of different people with tons of different backgrounds. It is key to be able to communicate with them effectively. I also agree with BossMan012 on the fact being wanting to learn more about how people function as a group rather than individuals. It is interesting to see how groups of either religions or cultures work as a whole.

  29. This is the first sociology class that I have ever taken, and I am very excited to learn about the topics that we discussed in class. It’s interesting that we incorporate sociology in our everyday lives without even knowing it. Taking this class will give me a better understanding of society, and hopefully will make me a better person. I took a psychology class my senior year of high school that I found very interesting, so I look forward to seeing the similarities between psychology and sociology. Although I find sociology an interesting topic to learn about, I don’t think that I would pursue a career in it like the woman in the video has. I find sociology interesting because it doesn’t revolve around just one person, but rather society as a whole and how we affect each other in both positive and negative ways, whether it be about religion, race, or even what part of the country you are from. Another thing she mentions is that sociology is all about asking questions, and with the topics that we are going to discuss in class, I am for sure going to have a load of questions. I also love the fact that people will have different different opinions than me on certain topics. I am a very open minded person that loves a good argument over two sided topics. I hope the rest of the class is also open minded to different ideas because it’ll make for better class discussion. Overall, I am very excited about this class to see how much I will learn to make me a better and more wise member of society. redman012

  30. I really enjoyed this video and how she was able to break down the basic surface of what sociology is all about.  Before today I was not exactly one hundred percent sure what sociology was all about.  I did not really understand what the difference between psychology and sociology would be and now from listening to the video I understand that sociology is more of the world around us such as our environment, ethnic groups, and religions.  I definitely agree with her when she says that the people most suited to do sociology are I definitely agree with her when she says that the people most suited to do sociology are people who have questions about that world the live in.  It definitely appears to me that if you are good and enjoy critical thinking then sociology would more than likely be interesting for you.  It might even be more interesting than critical thinking in other classes like a science or a math because it has to do with topics each and every one of us might encounter or think about each and every day.  That to me sounds much more practical than having to classify rock and minerals.  There is without a doubt going many more times in my career and in the real world that I might have to use skills acquired from a sociology class than other core classes, even if I don’t get any sort of a degree in sociology.  I also like how she talked about in the video that taking sociology and even majoring in it does not particularly mean that a person will or even has to go into the social field or social work.  She also talks about how the world is rapidly changing and that is one thing that really stuck out to me.  She talks about how the world is becoming globalized through immigration and other things like that.  You can study the reactions of people that are the ones in the grading and also there may be similar or complete opposite reactions of the people that have been in that particular place their lives and how they react to globalization and culturalization.

  31. I really enjoyed this video, the way she sums up sociology makes it easy and interesting to understand. I have taken a sociology class in high school and thoroughly enjoyed it. I did not think I would ever get the chance to take the class again, of course not knowing I would also need it in college. Although I really enjoyed the class in high school it never really quite understood the full spectrum of sociology. For example, I never really understood that the basis of sociology is asking questions in order to look deeper into our society, and also to get a better understanding in how the world around works and functions based on sociology. It will be interesting to learn on a deeper level why people do the things they do, and also how the society around us affects that. Though I have to take this class due to my major I am actually very excited to learn more about this subject. I am also looking forward to learning about how others are different, whether based on religion, economical status, or location. I also like the fact that when it comes to sociology everyone can have their own view point and reason for things and still be excepted. Even though I am not planning on majoring in sociology I feel as though it will help me in the future with nursing. It will give me an insight to people to see maybe if something is going on outside of their health needs. I am ready to learn and having a deeper understanding the way not only our society works, but also other societies that differ from our own. This class is one I feel like I can use going forward in my life and also my education to come. Hayesville012

  32. Coming into this course, I can honestly say I do not know a whole lot about sociology. This video was very informative, giving us a quick introduction as to what it is and how it can be used. My favorite point that she made in this video was the fact that sociology can fit into almost any career field possible because human interaction is key in most occupations. This being said, since I am hoping to one day go into law enforcement, studying sociology will be of much importance. Understanding where someone is from and how they were raised will so often determine why they choose to do what they do in life. Understanding their basic background will, in turn, assist me in helping them get onto a better path. This will help me to better embrace the values behind community policing. Often times, officers are looked at as only wanting to lock up these individuals. Although sometimes that may be necessary in some circumstances, that may not be appropriate in all cases. If we are better informed on how these people became who they are, we will be able to better help them in whichever way would work best in their situation. Another point that I liked in this video was when she was talking about the students of London being able to look at the place they grew up in with a totally new light. So often in life we grow accustomed to our point of view because it is what we know. If we are not careful, these thoughts can easily feed into an ethnocentric way of thinking, one that considers their specific culture above all others. The study of sociology truly can truly help to open our minds to a new way of viewing the world, one without partiality. (Patriots012)

Understanding how the people around you work and why society is the way it is is key. Now a days employers look for people who can work in a group. The world is becoming more easily connected and diverse. The workplaces are focusing on individuals collaborating and coming to solutions together. To be a successful group worker it is essential to understand a different culture, why a person does things they do, how their society is, how your society is, and how you can use your similarities and differences to work together and come to a solution. If one is oblivious to others society let alone theirs they will have trouble getting anywhere in the world today.

  33. This video is very interesting, and I feel changes the way others look at sociology. Taking this class as a requirement changes the way people look at it. When signing up for this class I really did not think there was much to take from it but just within the first day of class and this video really opens my eyes to what is all out there. One thing I though was very interesting was sending people to a different environment and watching the world around them. Opening one’s eyes to what they would not see in ones own environment which I can only relate when going on vacation and not understanding why simple things like food and communication are so different the further away you go from home. Sociology is more than what one many think a lot goes into our minds, how we interact with one another and go about our lives. Sometimes I feel like we need to be reminded to just stop and relax and watch everything around us because we miss a lot when our minds are occupied with different things. The video really shows that there a lot of jobs are open with a sociology degree in many different fields. People are not stuck to one job and have a lot of opportunity. Sociology gives people a variety and always has something interesting to learn. Some people feel stuck with the degree they chose and like they do not have a lot of options and I feel like this is a degree everybody could love unless not a people person. Lastly one thing that opens ones eyes about the video is the girls accent and how one could possible travel the world with this kind of degree and how anybody could have the opportunity.

    1. I feel like my views on sociology have slightly changed, but definitely for the better. I also thought this was going to be another class that has to be passed to on on, but after hearing Dr. White speak about what it has to offer, I want to learn more about it. Lastly, your point made about the degree giving people lots of opportunity is spot on! It seems like this degree has an avast range of options and that makes people feel comfortable in choosing what they want to do.

  34. For me, I liked the video for the fact it’s explaining sociology in a better way. She plenty of examples to help show her points. She also talks about why people use to think sociology was just another under taught degree. Although, it’s one of the most popular work fields out there, nowadays. In fact, almost any field of work involves it. I learned that people specializes in sociology tend to study a specific region of it. For instances, the lady in this video was specialized in terrorism and media, while her colleagues are better at different fields. So it is best when multiple people are collaborating together on a certain topic. These people also apply sociology, or “do” as they call it. This is nice, because you’re not just sitting at a computer all day doing research. You are actually going out into the world and applying what you know, or want to know. This makes me feel better since the research they are doing is creating a big impact on lots of areas. Including criminal justice. Without backup to support these claims, they could end up being untrue, or maybe even a problem. I completely agree with her first claim that people need to understand that sociology is more important than most people believe. If more people believe in that, then sociology would be taken more seriously, and would help a ton more people.

    1. I also liked this video and I agree that its explanation was a lot easier to understand. I also agree with the "doing" aspect of the video. I help relate to me because I am a very tactile learner which means that I do better with learning and work when it is more hands on than auditory or visual. It helps me and I strongly agree that it would help more people if it was studied and understood more than it is currently. If this happened, it would definitely help a large amount of people.

  35. I enjoyed this video. It was interesting to hear how sociology has evolved from a work based field of study to now a broad blanket term covering our many aspects of life. It was nice to hear what her and her colleagues are studying and teaching. For myself, I didn't really know what sociology really covered when i signed up for this class. After watching this video I feel it will be very interesting to learn the different ways people interact with each other and the different trends in society today. Her passion behind what shes teaching help her message be conveyed very well. It would be one thing to hear a monotone voice, but it seems she really enjoys and applies what she has learned, and what she teaches, from sociology. I find this helpful for myself because I enjoy learning and applying at least a little something from every class I take, and it seems sociology is used far more often than what i originally thought.

  36. I thoroughly enjoyed the video and it gave me an idea about what sociology is and how it works. It let me look into what it takes to be a sociologist and how it can be used in everyday jobs and not just in the field of sociology. She even gave examples in her schooling about going into London and looking at it though a different looking glass. That makes me wonder what it would be like to do a similar activity in my home town which is rural and in places like Peoria or Chicago. I also wonder what I would find after doing an activity such as this. I assume I would find things differently than I would elsewhere. I don’t know a lot about sociology at the moment but this video gave me a good introduction and a nice little explanation of the science. I think this video helped me in that it introduced me to a concept that I knew nothing about before this video and class and gave an explanation that I could understand. This video made me significantly more interested in the study than just taking the class because I have too and now I look forward to learning about sociology. As I stated earlier, I don’t know too much about sociology as of right now but I feel as if the way I look at things when this class is completed will be completely different then the way I look at thing as of right now.

  37. Sociology as a whole is much wider than most of us imagine. Sociology is the study of us, humans, and all that we encompass. Through the study of Sociology we explore human behavior in all aspects. I found this video by Dr. Sarah Maltby to be enlightening and interesting. She touched on the idea that many people in our world today can be skeptical regarding their views toward the career path of Sociology. She brought to light that many of us may have an interest in the financial and real-life aspect of a career path. Therefore you might think that the job opportunities for someone following the path of Sociology could be limited. However she goes on to explain how important Sociology is and of the great abundance of options one may have when seeking a path in Sociology. Also during the video, Dr. Maltby details the great many departments within the study of Sociology. Criminal Justice, News, Religion, Gender, and Human Rights. Simply anything that involves the human person and what human beings are passionate about. I feel inspired to learn more about the subject of Sociology over this semester and to become more aware of the world in which I live in. Sociology is all around me each and every day. Dr. Maltby's comment regarding her students that tour the great city of London as they observe Sociology in our modern world has inspired me to be more observant of my world and the events and happenings that surround me on a daily basis. -THEARSONIST012

  38. Before this watching this video, I was not very sure of the 'possibilities' that sociology had. I knew it to be an opinionated type of study- but really failed to recognize this as an opportunity to work with others as a combined effort in any field of work to essentially merge ideas and thoughts. Who really would of thought that sociology plays a part in this? To be more observant in the ongoings of the world and to really know what others thoughts are on any particular matter, will be absolutely welcomed and for sure an eye opener. I look forward to learning and growing the way I think and others for that matter while I take my first class in sociology. Dr. Maltby's short video has enlightened me to the possibility that this is definitely something to explore and keep an open mind about. Looking forward to the time spent learning in this class and I hope to have an even more open mind about anything I may have an opinion about. I will also be so very interested in others responses as opposed to mine. I am not going into this with the pretentions that this is a debate class, I am going into this class fully engaged and prepared to join in discussions and observe others opinions. TRM012

  39. After watching this video I gained a greater understanding of what Sociology is. Before watching this video I was not quite sure what we would be learning about. Sociology is a way of understanding the world around us in a new and exciting way. It is the general study of the world around us and human behaviors. Dr. Sarah Maltby did a great job of sharing new perspectives on Sociology. She is very passionate about teaching and sharing her knowledge of Sociology to young students. Dr. Maltby proves Sociology to be very interesting. It is amazing that she has a majority of london students, but sends them into London for a project and they see it in a whole new way. I think it is interesting that she touched on the ideas of what people think of Sociology today. For example, she mentioned that people today are skeptical about pursuing a job in Sociology because we are such a financial based society. She mentioned that people think jobs involving Sociology are very limited, but she goes on to say that most jobs involve Sociology in some way. Basically any job that involves humans requires the use of Sociology. I am very excited to learn more and more about Sociology, so I can see my surrounding in a new way. I also hope that it will help me succeed in my future career.

    1. I as well agree that I was definitely thinking that jobs involving sociology have to be very limiting. I truly did not understand the scope of what sociology could accomplish in a workplace. Do realize and understand now that sociology is involved in most jobs nowadays and that any job involving humans requires the use of sociology. TRM012

  40. i really appreciate the initiative of this video. I was struggling to undsrstand what sociology is actually all about. i actually get the subject mixed up with phsychology very often. i now know that sociology is more of how the world effects us as people and how it makes us live the way that we do as to where psychology is more of our personal experiences and how our minds deal with it, making us how we are today. sociology seems to be a very interesting topic. it may actually change the way everyone in the class looks at the world and possibly even how they go about their daily lives. what i am most interested about while learning sociology will be the changes of the world and how they have an effect on all of society. what if laws were changed, how different of a world we would live in. i also love the fact that sociology is opinionated, i think that everyone having their own opinion has a huge effect on how society behaves. i love voicing my opinion, i mean seriously what would the world be like with opinions? i am extrememly excited to learn more in the class. i am a little overloaded with information right now but i believe as the semester goes on it will become easier and one of my favorite classes!

  41. I feel like this video was very enlighten for myself. Before I watched this video, I had little to no knowledge to sociology, so this video alone gave me a better and different outlook on this class. I always thought sociology was just learning how people function in a group just that cut and dry, but I realized it is deeper than that. This video made me realize I really could have more of an interest in sociology than I thought before. I also loved how she mentions that sociology is important in everybody lives rather we know it or not. Then she also made me sit and realize that if I am curious about the world or something happening in the world that ties up what sociology is. The lady also basically mentions how what ever job you have or want it would be a good idea to be familiar with sociology because its important to know how to deal with people and their attitudes and beliefs. I like how she mentions asking questions is the basic step and how its important because if I don’t have no other skill I can ask some question. That’s just because I am a very curious person rather it is school or in the work place. I like to learn new things and I like to know why things are this way and why things are that way. I feel like me taking this sociology class it will help me improve in life with talking to people and dealing with people. I feel like sociology help people so they won’t be so closed minded and a lot of people are closed minded that’s why everybody can’t deal with everybody but I feel like this class will help me adapt and work with others.

  42. I found this video very informative. I never looked at Sociology as such a broad topic. I see Sociology class giving me a better understanding of places and the different people around me. I like this topic because it will tie into real world scenarios and situations. Understanding Sociology can give you knowledge that will help with any field you decide to go into. I believe having more understanding of the underlying reasons certain things happen in our society or why people act or do things differently is a skill that is essential to have success in the real world. I am looking forward to learning about why things happen in society the way they do. I find any information like this very interesting. This class will better prepare me for my other college courses. I plan to learn a lot. I specifically want to hear about how poeples lives are shaped the way they are. I want to know why and how certain life events or the way your life is different from others effects your life outcome and the way you see the world. I always find myself wondering why or how a person turned out the way they did or go about daily life the way they do. I also want to hear about societies that are foreign to me! I want to better understand my society but also ones which I do not live in. It is beneficial to understand all of the world and its people! I truly look forward to learning new things this semester.
