  1. In this article we noticed that the problem Recidivism in the United States is an increasing issue. A lot of people are being sent back to jail because of violating their parole. When saying violating parole it could range from being something so small like not notifying the sheriff about little changes but can also be a more serious violation including committing another crime. More than a quarter of the 600,000 Americans who are re-incarcerated each year are sent back to prison because they have violated their parole. Although in most of these cases the people who have been re-arrested or re-incarcerated have not committed a new crime. In fact, 26 percent of all recidivists are sent back behind bars due to technical violations, include unpaid fines and fees. The policy on probation and parole and the recurrence in the patterns of the correctional system is actually setting the person up for failure, instead of making it easy for the person to succeed giving it the nickname of the revolving door of justice. Politicians, advocacy groups, and celebrities are calling for a radically different approach to probation and parole. The correctional system needs to change different aspects of the parole system because it is sending people back behind bars for violations that are not dangerous to the community. One individual was sent back to prison was just sitting outside his apartment in his car with his girlfriend. While sitting in the car his probation officer pulled up and told him that he was violating curfew and he was sent back to jail. One participant in the study was unable to pay child support and was sent back to jail for six months. How was he able to pay his child support if he was behind bars and not able to work? Being sent back to jail would also make it more difficult for him to get a job when he is released from jail. A parent being sent back to jail for a petty violation of probation effects the child because they have to deal with another round of lost and separation. Another account of a person being sent to jail was he forgot to register with the sheriff his vehicle change. Another was violated because he forgot to notify the sheriff about his cell phone number change. In this article, the researchers said that they had hoped that this article would create a spark dialogue in hopes to express how high the rates of recidivism actually is and discuss what type of different behaviors will be enough to be considered for a re-arrest. -Jwilliejack789, Sunshine789, Pearles789, Steelers789

  2. Recidivism is a huge issue among people on probation. Most of the time these people merely cannot pay fees which is very hard to do because it is extremely difficult to find a job due to trouble with the law. This is very unfortunate and many people on probation end up right back to square one, in the prisons. I agree that there needs to be some changes made, for example, lowering the price of fees and even spreading out the fines by income. We discussed in class that if we were to lower fines on the lower income population, and raise the fines on the higher income population, the criminal justice would benefit financially and the people would feel the same burden of the crime because of income disparity. If things do not change, the cycle of mass incarceration will not break, and we, as taxpayers, will suffer. - Family789, LW789, Cubs789, Pitbull789
