Child Assaults and Proper Investigations

Comments

  1. Watching this video over child pornography and the offenders arrested has me feeling many different ways. One this video disgusted me very much hearing about all these people that watch these things on the internet. Some of these people even go further by trying to meet up with the children and sexually abuse them. Another thing that disgusted me was the ages of children that these men were watching and sometimes assaulting, the video stated anywhere from three months to thirteen years old. Another portion of this that I found crazy and concerning was the amount of people that were arrested, that worked near or with young children. One man worked for a school district for thirty years and even held high positions, this bugs me because who knows what happened during school, especially that he held a position of authority. Two other men worked at Disney, the place where every little kid dream to go, and there were two men that we caught that were guilty of watching child pornography. The officer talking stated something along the lines of, anyone that watches child pornography has the ability to commit sexual abuse on children. These people are bad people and deserve to be locked up, but do they deserve to be ridiculed and broken down to the point where their families may be affected? In this video the officer speaking was clearly mad about what happened to these children, which he has every right to be, but he should have spoken in a more professional matter. This officer was extremely unprofessional in his speech, sometimes including family members of the arrestees, or calling them idiots, at one point he even said one arrestee must have the IQ of 17. This is very uncalled for, although they did horrible things when the officer speaks this way the credibility of what he is saying is thrown out, because he is not treating these people the way people should be treated. All in all this video was an eye opener to how many people there are like this in the world, as well as an eye opener regarding how police should be professional during speeches. -LW456

  2. After watching this video I had a couple of different thoughts about Polk county and their sheriff. At first, I thought that this was a great thing, they caught a giant amount of these pedophiles and our cities are safer now but as the sheriff kept talking it kept getting worse and worse. I know when talking about this subject you can’t help but feel fired up and be in your emotions but you have to think of everyone else involved, not just how you feel. The victims, who maybe have been watching could have been effective by the language that the sheriff was using. It was insensitive and unprofessional. Another person who might have been hurt by the words used by him are family members of the perpetrators. Insulting the preps IQ and saying how ‘mama must be proud’ is so unprofessional and heartless. They have no control over what their family does and now their kids are going to suffer even more than before. After he said all these things it could have messed up the entire prosecution. He was declaring them guilty and throwing insults left and right. The judge could’ve thrown out the whole case because of the unprofessionalism of the Polk county sheriff.
After knowing some of the things these people did I can understand why someone would be so fired up about this. Victims as young as 3 months old were being harmed. On over 500 counts of child pornography and other child abuse charges more than half was one person. These men were asking young girls to meet up with them and the police intercepted it which is fantastic. I think the police down there did a great job and intercepting and catching these criminals but the attitude of the sheriff really changed the entire feel of the operation. Sun 456

  3. After watching this video, it was rather frightening to see just how many men they had arrested for Criminal Sexual Assault in Florida. The sheriff spoke at the press conference, and he seemed very unprofessional. He stated that his county had arrested thirty-one pedophiles. He stated that most of these men had targeted small children online or simply watching pornography in their homes. The chief started to ramble about each man. He showed their mug shots, said how many charges they had, where they worked, and that these men were addicted to pornography. When the sheriff was speaking about these men and their kids, I believe that he was putting a stigma on their children. Every time their children are in public, people will say nasty things to them or possible hurt them for what their dad has done. I wonder how many victims were re-traumatized from seeing this news cast. When someone is a victim, it is traumatizing to see their accusers face or mug shot. I think that the chief got great amounts of joy when he was reading through all these perpetrators information. I do not think that he was being sensitive towards the victims and the victim’s families. At one point, I believe that sheriff was poking fun at two of them. He was using two mug shots, and having a conversation between the both. In my opinion that is very unprofessional. I do understand that it is very important to be aware of who is a registered sex offender. But all that information is public information. You can look at it on the county website. I am glad that the sheriff arrested these men, because it is sickening to think about a grown man having sex with a minor. But the sheriff certainly could have shared this information in a more professional way. Illinigurl456

  4. Watching this video over child pornography and the wrongdoers captured makes me feel a wide range of ways. One this video disturbed me especially catching wind of every one of these individuals that watch these things on the web. A portion of these individuals even goes further by attempting to get together with the youngsters and explicitly misuse them. Something else that appalled me was the times of youngsters that these men were viewing and once in a while ambushing, the video expressed somewhere in the range of a quarter of a year to thirteen years of age. In the wake of knowing a portion of the things these individuals did I can comprehend why somebody would be so started up about this. Exploited people as youthful as 3 months old were being hurt. On more than 500 counts of youngster sex offenses and other kid misuse allegations, the greater part was one individual. These men were requesting that little youngsters get together with them and the police blocked it which is phenomenal. I think the police down there worked superbly and capturing and getting these hoodlums yet the mentality of the sheriff truly changed the whole feel of the activity. The sheriff talked at the question and answer session, and he appeared to be exceptionally amateurish. He expressed that his district had captured thirty-one pedophiles. He expressed that the majority of these men had focused on little kids on the web and, or essentially watching child pornography in their homes. The sheriff began to meander aimlessly about each man. He demonstrated their mug shots, said what number of charges they had, where they worked, and that these men were dependent on child pornography. At the point when the sheriff was talking about these men and their children. -smiley456

  5. I did find this video entertaining for a lot of reasons, although some of those reasons are probably not all that good. First off, the subject matter gives you an insight to how sick people can be. I was honestly not expecting to hear about the two men who were found to be working for Disney. The age preferences for these men really hit me hard, the lowest age being around three months. The thought of someone with conscious thought wanting to watch something like that is really sickening to me. Secondly, I did find the delivery of the sheriff to be not so much as unprofessional but as more of unnecessary. What I mean is, he didn’t need to be cracking jokes, making the pictures talk, calling them names, and even calling them monsters. That was really uncalled for and seemed to dehumanize the people with these remarks. The real punchline was the sheriff made the images of the two brothers made me cringe and lower my head. That was really uncalled for and made the press conference even more despicable and humiliating for the men who were incriminated. Lastly, I think what was even worse was how the families and friends would feel if they saw this. This was really the thing that bothered me the most above all. The sheriff really should have chosen his words a lot differently if he would have considered that he was going to be on national television. This was the real icing on the cake in my opinion because of how this could have been better if the sheriff had chosen his words differently. If this was private, then I guess that would be more passable. This was an awful conference and I hope the sheriff does eventually feel some sort of guilt after what he said. -OUTATIME456

  6. This video has many things that I do not necessarily agree with, despite being very positive what this department did, it still does not make sense to present this individuals in this way. The hardest pill to swallow in regards to this video is the fact that these people all walk among us in society and we may never realize it. While each and everyone of these people belong in prison for their actions I feel it was wrong to announce the places of business that these people worked at prior to their arrest because not only were they areas where young children are present, but they can ruin the business based on the fact that these people walked among the customers children. Another issue I saw with this video is that it was broadcast on live television to all the public which can have a huge effect on families. We just toured the Peoria County Jail which Sheriff Asbell spoke about why the daily arrest sheet was no longer sent out in the way that it was due to a recent suicide of someone who was arrested for a DUI. If this can happen with the people who are arrested, just imagine the family who is for the first time hearing and seeing their family member on national television and the stress that it could put on them. I understand what was trying to be done here by shaming these people who were involved in child pornography and speaking to the young children and trying to show how low they are. I just feel that this was just approached in the wrong way because of how the men were mocked and in a sense, made fun of in a very childish manor. Blues456

  7. From the perspective of an investigator, I have many mixed feelings about the contents of this particular debriefing. I am glad that the police department was able to arrest so many offenders, although some of their privacy was invaded. I am not sure if any of the information given would legally infringe on any of their rights or complicate the investigation, but that is worth questioning. However, some of the information was a great reminder for the general public, especially those with children. Molesters are often married, have jobs or hobbies that place them near children, and have been victimized themselves. I think the chief of police in the video ignored that fact that some of these people who do horrendous things have had the same horrendous things done to them. He was insensitive to the families and children of those who have been arrested, as well as to the victims and their families, who had to relive details of the perpetrators crimes, preferences, and see their faces again. Sexual assault, especially of children who are unable to consent, is among the most sensitive matter that any person or investigator could confront. The delivery of any information regarding crimes, especially sexual crimes against children, should be handled much more professionally than they were in this instance. I was surprised to hear him belittle the IQ of one perpetrator, disclose workplaces of everyone involved, and even mimic an imaginary conversation between two brothers with their pictures. There is a fine line between the amount and content of information that is helpful and informative, and unnecessary details and personal commentary that has no place in a public announcement. Although he should have done his best to remain objective, if he had those thoughts, they should never have been voiced, especially to the public. -Gatsby456

    1. I agree with you. I am glad that the police department could make so many arrests but the way they approached this press conference was unprofessional. Some of their privacy rights were invaded and that is what was bad about this conference. If they had thoughts they shouldn’t be voiced. I agree 100%. -softball456

  8. After watching this video it gave me the impression that the Sheriff of Polk County should not be delivering speeches again. He took a very bad approach on the subject of child pronography. In my opinion, I do not think he should have stated where the offenders worked or say if they have kids or not and how old they are. For stating where they worked, it can put a bad reputation out for those companies. And for saying if they have kids can affect the ones that have kids who might be watching this press conference. They also might be friends that are watching it and then the offenders kids get laughed and teased at school. Also the sheriff was calling them idiots and pretending that the pictures are talking to each other was not professional. Other than the Sherrif not delivering the press conference well, I couldn’t belive how many charges each criminal got for child pornography in Polk County. People are just sick these days and it disgusts me. I was shocked when even a man that is in prison and gets to go home once a week still looked at child pronography. You have the privilege to go home once a week and that's what you do with your time. That is just ridiculous. There were men who looked at 2-3 year old kids. That is just nasty and something has to be wrong with them mentaly. Those are just young innocent kids. Also older men messaging 13 year old girls on the internet and sending them pictures blows my mind. Overall this is a serious matter and it needs to be more professionalized when approaching it. People do not realize how much crime is going on behind a computer screen. I feel like computer systems should be monitored more.

  9. When watching this video I was expecting to hear about how this police department caught all these offenders which is very impressive. I was not expecting to hear the sheriff of this police department show pictures of each offender and start saying comments like the men don’t even exist. He begins by saying they have several topics that they need to go over in this conference but he spends most of this video talking about the offenders and letting all this information out about them. I don’t think the sheriff was being professional at all throughout this conference. It was such a good thing that they made a bust like this but it almost is erased after he gave this speech. In my opinion, I thought that he sounded sarcastic and was not being very serious about it at all. I thought that it was interesting to hear about how one offender worked at Disney but also thought that it is not a good idea to tell everyone where the offenders used to work. By the way he is talking it just seems like he does not have a clue what he is speaking about. The sheriff did not think about who he could be hurting when he would talk about the offenders personal information. He was saying where they worked, where they lived, talking about their kids if they had any. When he was giving this speech he is re-traumatizing the family of that offender. The children of those offenders are affected not just by what their father did but now they could be treated differently when they are at school. I thought this was an interesting video because it showed me how different police departments can be. I mostly saw this video as being negative but there is positivity to it because they put away people that needed to be put away. Overall, I thought that the sheriff could have handled the whole situation with more professionalism. -hl456

  10. While the Sheriff's performance was highly laughable, the subject matter was very upsetting and shouldn't have been treated with light satire. Some of the cases that the sheriff was highlighting could have gone terribly wrong, for example the case where the officers took over the account of that underage girl to catch that child predator. Other than the fact that it was even mentioned in the video, it didn't take me by surprise that the two Disney employees were charged with what they were doing. Disney controls a part of the adult industry and it's sickening to even think, write, or talk about. A theme I've also noticed among these offenders is the fact that a good deal of them are in administrative positions. How can parents trust that their children are safe anywhere anymore? A helicopter style of parenting has become prominent and useful in adapting to some of these dangers. The main argument I'd make from seeing the video is that children below a certain age shouldn't be allowed to have phones or cruise the internet with such ease. Knowing is half the battle, reading commitment reports and the sex offenders registry is useful. Acting defensively to prevent the children from getting into these situations is the other half.

  11. As I was watching this video with the polk county police department I noticed a few things that made me angry. First, there were a large amount of men who were into child porn. It discusses me that there are so many men in the polk county area who are predators. These men had possesion of child pornagraphy on there phones, and even their computers. Second, the way the sheriff presented these men were very disrespectful. Even though these men are surely sexual predators, he continued to call these men names such as “rascals”, and “idiots”. This subject matter really upsets me. I think that police have done a great job with keeping these sexual predators off of the street, but I also think it was also disrespectful to let all the viewers watching know where these men work. Even though these men committed horrible crimes they still have a right not to be dehumanized. They also have families of their own,and even young children. They have people that love them just like human beings. As he rambled and showed each picture it got worse. I think him being a sheriff he should be at least more professional. It was very unprofessional for for the sheriff to discuss their personal information. One thing that was good the sheriff did was inform people in polk county about these sexual predators. It is very important to know that if you look up sexual predators in your city, you will surely see all of the registered sex offenders. You'll see a picture of the offender, their address, the offenders age , and age of the victim when the crime happened. Most importantly the charge. I think that if you have young children its very important you are looking up sexual predators in your area to be on the safe side.

  12. This video differed from the first video in many ways, this video was in fact informational but it was informational in a lot of wrong ways. It explained that they have been using two different techniques to try and catch child offenders: “trick or treat” method and “fall hall.” we did not get into the fall method but we did go over the trick or treat method. This method basically will set a trap for the offenders and trick them into getting caught. This method has made 17 arrests and the fall method has made 31 arrests so it seems to be working.

Although, these may be good methods to use when catching a child molester, the video did not use the information they receive professionally. The officer giving the speech decided to show the face of multiple offenders along with their preference of age and where they worked. It may be convenient to know where your local child offenders are in the city but considering they all are locked up in prison and not going to be released soon there was not necessarily a need to show their face on national television to embarrass their family and friends. He embarrassed them because he told the community if the offender had a wife and kids and how old his kids were and even announced what school they attended. The families have been through the rough time of learning their family member is a criminal they don’t need to be embarrassed on the news. The officer also announced where the offender worked, some of them worked at Disney, schools, hospitals, etc.. But, even though it helps to know you need to keep your child safe everywhere even in kid friendly places, most parents already know that so the officer did not need to announce that on TV to turn away tourists.

This video was extremely unprofessional and not only did it embarrass the innocent families of the offender but the officer himself because he stood up in front of the community and announced it all.

  13. After watching this video on the Polk County, FL Undercover Child Pornography Sting, I was irritated. The information presented in this press conference was very sensitive and serious and the police chief was extremely unprofessional in his delivery. It is important for the public to know and have access to the crimes and photos of these offenders for the safety of their potential children; however, under no circumstances should a police officer put his or her opinion of the offender into their public presentation or paperwork. They must consider the families involved on both sides of the case and how they may be affected by the information going out. The police chief should never have made jokes about the offenders’ IQs or mentioned that they have a child in high school. That is unnecessary and insensitive information that the public could figure out on their own if they so chose, but it should never be so willingly given out by someone who should be seen as a respectable law enforcement officer. I only hope that they corrected this technique and present information more professionally so that the work they achieved may be more appreciated. -Gamma456

  14. After viewing the video of the undercover child pornography sting i was left in awe after heparin the presser. The way that sheriff described the offenders and the way he presented them was overboard and very off topic. We don't need to know about their childhood or their intelligence. We needed to know solely about the operation and how many were arrested. Yes they were public records but your opinion on them is not, and downgrading them as humans did no justice what so ever. Maybe next time they present information it will be more appreciated and on topic. -Wiseguy456
