Use of Force Explained.....Thoughts?

  1. The Police Use of Force Explanation video was done by retired police sergeant Warneke of fifteen years from Denver. His goal in creating this video was to repair the relationship between the public and the police force through education. Steve Warneke says that there are two main reasons officers use force. The first reason police officers use force is to get peopl;e to comply with what they’re supposed to be doing. The other reason is to stop a threat to others or themselves. When it comes down to it there are no rules that say it must be a fair fight between a police officer and an individual. If you go at an officer swinging trying to hit them they could use several different weapons to detain you. Warneke uses an example from a football game, where a woman was being escorted out by a police officer. In this situation this woman slapped the officer across the face. The officer then hit her back knocking her out. It was said that he didn’t hit her back in a form of retaliation, but rather to stop her from continuing to assault him. The reason for use of force in this situation is to stop the threat. However, I don’t think knocking out a woman is a good way to handle the situation. I feel that there are many other ways you could have handled that situation, such as detaining her before escorting her out and not carrying her over your head. Warneke gets into situations where an officer is alone facing someone with a knife. In this situation the officer is not going to want to use a taser, because it could not work on the person and they could lose their life because of it. So when an officer is by themselves they should use a gun, but in a group of several officers they should use a taser. This leads to where an officer should shoot a suspect. The center mass should be shot because it has the highest probability of stopping the threat. Shooting the gun out of someone's hand is a lot more difficult and dangerous than shooting at center mass. I found it pretty scary that an officer has to be at least 21 feet away from someone with a knife to be able to stop them before getting stabbed. This is because someone is sprinting at you, and you don’t have enough time to pull the gun, aim, and fire. Overall I found the video very informational and interesting. -CRJB123
